Here's a few pics of a sbr I built after receiving permission from the gov. This is done legally on all levels, as a semiautomatic. This is the third of four ak style rifles I've built. This was originally built as a 16" carbine, then disassembled and redone into a sbr after getting my stamp of approval. Form 1 approves in 31 days after payment. The gas block/fsb combo is a custom made piece I made by miling a M76 gas block w/ regulator and Npap fsb and welding them together. Lots of lathe, milling, welding, grindidng, filing work. Y'all know. Oh, barrel is now 11.75" This rifle started life for me as a Yugo M72 parts kit from Numrich with a Childers reciever and Akbuilder chromelined 16" barrel. This is the M72 carbine start point for this project:
I wish I had pictures of the gas block and fsb after milling, but this is after welding them. After grinding, dremel, filing. Even more milling. Time for some lathe work. Hmm.. This barrel already has a gas port.. Guess it'll be shorter than that. Cutting some threads. I went OG M14x1.0LH. If you noticed, the fsb/gb combo journal is larger than the smallest part of the barrel. The cooling fins were lathed down and still provide a good seal.
Drilling, cutting, welding gas tube. Time for the gas port to be drilled. Took me several times to get the right port size and regulator ports drilled to where I wanted. Setting 2 on the M76 regulator is my regular setting. 1 is undergassed, 3 is overgassed. Rough finished front half minus shortened cleaning rod next to 16" barreled Romanian "G" Gaurda front.
Finally.. Then, a while after being built, I added a Bulgarian triangle folder to "The Cottonmouth", my M72 super shorty.
Here is most of the work for that.. Old trunnion out. Weld up holes and grind down welds. After sandblasting. After cold bluing.
Mill side folder trunnion 0.25mm from each side for 1.5mm thick reciever, instead of typical 1mm thick receiver. Drill new trunnion rivet holes. Dimple reciever holes and rivet new trunnion. All swell necks rivets. Hmm..dust cover has to be shaved and trunnion a hair. Latch holes dremeled.
A lotta darn work!!! Good that you have the skill, determination, and moreover the patience!!! Woodpusherpro
Thanks for the kind words. It was definitely one of a kind when I built it. Now, there are a few that are similair, but the cut/milled/ welded together front sight and gas block is unique at least. No other like that in the world. I wanted to do one "crazy" build.
It is fun yet effective. It is a little blasty at night, but the PKM style flash hider really does a good job for its size, and for how short the barrel is.
Very well done Im a fool for all things AKM. Would love to do a SBR build to add to the AKM collection.
I have a couple polish, underfolder and fixed stock. They are nice. Better quality then the romys. I like the hungarians with their sexy blonde wood. AKM-63 is a hoot to shoot IMO. I have more yugos than anything. I like the thicker receiver and once came across a good deal on kits. I would like a yugo M-95, though I guess not a true AK shooting 5.56. Hard to nail one down as my favorite.
Yea, I'll stick to 7.62 for the aks because that's what I hoarded. The Yugo M72B1 kits were fairly cheap a few years ago. Don't hate on allll the Romys, though. I have a 1969 kit that is nice as any Polish. But, the Circle 11 Polish seem to be consistently nice, always top shelf.
I dont hate all romys. I have a couple of those. My good friend calls akms trash can guns. I tell him to stick with his no character lego ARs.
I agree, the aks just have character and something.. special. But, I love most firearms and can't think of any I couldn't have fun firing.
Looks great, but I'm in the camp of making a pistol with a brace that doesn't need any stamp or government approval.
