Had nice temps last night, so we finished the rounds we had cut on the ramp. Made enough splits to finish this 1 cord+ rack... And a few for the next side...
Yes, it's a few of the smaller logs, crooked, knotty. Wouldn't stack good on the log piles. Had to make room for more.
We had another good evening/night on the woodyard. Started cutting about 7:40, got the smaller logs bucked and staged with the MS180, then used the XS029 on a few bigger logs Took a break to swap chains and relocate this little guy, Carolina Rail Runner...moved him so the cats wouldn't snack on him Finished bucking about 9, with a nice stack of rounds Fired up the splitter about 9:15. Had 1 log that was curly... The bigger logs have a beautiful color and tight grain Made good progress, we stopped about 10:30 or so. We have a customer who likes some bigger pieces. Probably let him have this cord when we finish.
When we stopped splitting a couple weeks ago, we had these 5 logs left Almost 2 rows done in the shed... This morning, while Miz Carol was cutting grass, I got those logs bucked and staged, made 34 rounds Got the splitter and fans going. Got 13 rounds split and stacked. Should have enough to finish this rack Felt like we were wearing the air today. It was thick. Came inside at 1PM...
It's been an interesting week or so. We finished the 2 cord rack... Got the splitter set up on the next rack... We went to our grandson b-day party July 9th, was exposed to Covid, 4 people there wound up testing +... We were fine, but work protocol said I had to stay home last week...so we worked on more wood Had a big water oak in the mix, sure had some nice grain and rays. Would have made a nice mill log for buzz-saw We have had afternoon showers since the 4th, so our grass cutting has been busy too. We cut this yard Friday, takes almost 3 hrs... We have had these logs only a couple months, but the borers are just starting under the bark Most bark comes off easy, especially the red oaks, water oak tends to be tight. Got another nice bark pile Working at night after the heat and showers... We cut another yard yesterday morning, then did a little tractor work for a neighbor. We had our 2 and 5 yr old grandsons for the evening. We took them to Chili's for dinner, they enjoyed that. After we took them home @9PM, I decided to get a little wood therapy in. Finished splitting the rounds on the ramp. Made a nice start on the last row. And the pedestal fan died......
Tough fighting the heat let alone rain, but you find a way. When life hands you lemons, make firewood. Those borers dont waste any time. Do you prefer to have wood with bark on? Sitting for a while its inevitable. I have a two month old stack of red oak sections covered and wonder if they have found it. Been very dry here and wonder if that affects there activity.
If it comes off easy, I like to take it off now, dries faster amd stacks better. We stacked a bunch of hickory last year. Now, the bark is coming off.
Yes sir, it did. It ran most of the time. If not when we were splitting, then blowing thru the stacks. Even carried it a few times to the big clearing site job we're doing. I'll start a new thread on it's replacement.
After getting home from work around 7pm, Miz Carol was finishing up grass cutting, so I went to the woodyard. Had 4 logs left to buck, got those done and staged some on the ramp. We stopped and ate a sammich, then returned to split and stack. Shut it down about 10:30. Made some more progress...
That rack was finished last night @ 10:10PM. Had 2 rounds left. It measures 4.5x6x8'...1.6 cords. We have a customer that typically gets 4 pickup loads a year. That should supply him.
Got the far end of the wood yard looking better... About 3.5 cords CSS'ed Got the 2 bark piles spread on the driveway coming down from mom's house We still have this pile of campfire, chunks and big knot pieces to sort into totes Then we staged more of our older inventory for processing. This will be loaded directly on the truck or dump trailer and delivered. Will be starting on orders soon.
