Went on down from North Platte Saturday afternoon to check it out. Not really sure what I was looking at as nothing is marked or flagged. There’s definitely some big cottonwoods with a lot of lean to them. Lot of smaller hackberry in the 4-10” range. And a couple others I’m not sure about, maybe Boxelder. Not really much in the way of firewood to get excited about. But I’ll probably take a bunch of the hackberry, kinda as my bonus pay. I’m surprised I didn’t spot any ash, but that doesn’t mean there isn’t any. Not many leaves on the trees yet. Here’s a couple pictures of the general area and a couple cottonwoods I’m sure are targets. Plus one other, maybe a Boxelder tree? Pretty much 100 miles on the nose from my house.
I found out last night that we got the job. Turns out he was the only bidder, and I have no idea what his total bid was. I always wonder how much money got left on the table. I’m starting to think I was to cheap, especially after seeing a couple of the cottonwoods. He said that there’s definitely some ash on the east end of the area that I didn’t see as I didn’t go that far. There’s also a pile of dead and down stuff that will have to be moved that I did look at, might be some elm worth getting in it. Thinking about getting a 36” lightweight bar for the 181 but not finding one that I think is reasonably priced.
Thats great news. An wooding adventure in the making. Well, if you priced it too cheap look at it this way...you'd do it just for the free wood. When are you guys doing this?
First may I say don't keep second guessing yourself and beating yourself up. I've done it to many times. You gave blind quoting a shot and it is what it is. Make the best of it and use it as a learning experience. Have a enjoyable time playing with your saws, be careful and go home in one piece and all will be good in the end.
I’m hoping I have an excuse to visit my wife’s cousin that weekend and make it a little GTG Would be fun to meet ya in person and I love a reason to run a saw or even just an onlooker
Well the time is here. Forecast temperatures a 100 today (Friday), 94 on Saturday and 98 on Sunday. I’m planning to try and be on the job around 5-6 this evening and we’ll work till dark. Start tomorrow at first light and then probably knock off sometime in the early afternoon for several hours and hit it again in the evening. Original plan of camping out on site has changed to a motel. If we could have done it in the fall like I first thought, that would have been fun. But I’m not going to fight mosquitoes and deer flies all night along with the heat. Been sick the last 3 days and that’s been pretty concerning as far as being able to do this, but fortunately today I’m feeling pretty much back to normal. Should be able to get pictures coming tonight
Have fun and post lots of pics. That much heat doesnt sound like fun. Do you get a dry heat or is it humid as can be? Good to hear you are feeling better.
There’s so much to do in a short time that I’m not gonna get to waste much time taking pictures. Here are 2 that don’t really show much, kinda took them to do the before and after thing. The one cottonwood in the picture with the red arrow pointing to it used exactly all of a 32” bar to bore cut it. I’m not sure if there was more water running out of it or myself when I got done. Probably close to 20 similar cottonwoods that all have pretty hard lean and will need bore cut. Looks like most of the “good” wood is hackberry. There is also a couple piles of old stuff that has to be moved and there is a bunch of stove ready elm in it. Oh, did I mention we might have bit off more than we can chew in one weekend!
Has anyone ever finished a big project like that on time? I sure haven’t. Good luck tomorrow—I hope you’re listening to how you feel so you know when to throttle down.
