Almost got all of the blow down oak split , maybe another 3-4 rounds left for tomorrow but enough was enough. Got the last piece of the cherry ( she was a chunk ) started but ran out of fuel in the splitter so seemed like a great time to stop and go jump on the pool instead, it sure looked inviting after half a day on the splitter on this heat !! Hope everyone is staying safe and cool.
They are , but also make a lot of wood. It is nice to hit 10-12 8” rounds every once in a while and change it up tho
That is a lot for a half day! When we had 3 people on the machine, we could clear a cord in about 90 minutes. Now I'm splitting by hand, mostly at the cut, 7 cord since march when I started in earnest. Haven't run the splitter yet. Its kinda nice being about as jacked-up as I've ever been. Imagine buZZsaw BRAD is benching bulldozers if he hand split the most of what, 50 cord? (Shake his hand, you know he's swung a maul for a long time).
To be fair , and honest there was about 1/4 of that piled already but my old back is saying it was still a lot ! I swung a maul and splitting ax for about 25 years, only had the hydro for a couple years now. I will still break out the Fiskars err once and while but it generally collects dust these days. I have an office job essentially and really cut wood mostly to be active on the weekends and days off
That's still an impressive pile. I get good cardio at work (no longer a desk-jockey) and a good hard workout with the maul. That will stop at some point to be sure. And I'll keep the machine handy for that day.
Thanks for the kind words Dave, but the hydro has been my friend for the last year plus. I hand split maybe 10% of my wood now. Here at my place in the woods and at her daughters in East Haddam. If i was a "casual" hoarder (whatever that is) id hand split all my firewood. I do enjoy it when im not tired out or pressed for time.
I remember hand splitting a huge old hickory one time , man talk about wearing me out…..also had a horrible ice storm once and the only wood my neighbors and o could come up with was a cottonwood tree that was about 3’ in diameter. We all stood around it taking turns smacking it. Talk about a lot of work for some sparking crappy heat…. Glad those days are over !
Sweet. Nice to have a pool to jump in after the work is done. I did some yesterday but no pool afterwards. Well, the afternoon temperature was only 73 so a nice day for working.
At least you had some shade. The splitter i use is in the shade most of the time. I over did it Tuesday and paid the price even though it was mostly shaded and breezy. Nice you had the pool to jump into.
We freeze six 5 gallon buckets of water and dump them in the pool. It helps , they melt quick but feels nice to float next to one !
Shade helped for sure. No wind yesterday but I have a battery jobsite fan and it does help a little at least. Easy to overdo it in this heat. Triple digits for foreseeable future here. Not a fan. Been on the tractor all day today , just came on for a sandwich and some ac before getting back to mowing.
Thats exactly it. Few hours as time permits, early in the day if need be... Wednesdays work was about the same size pile as todays (pic). This was a couple hours beginning at sunrise, and until work.
