First off thanks to jo191145 for giving this to me. A roll of flooring underlayment. 1/8" thick foam rubber with a plastic face 54" wide. It is waterproof and covers nicely but needs a smooth surface to be ideal. I have a 4x8 sheet of old plywood over the stack pictured. (black locust nuggets for weight) Wondering how it holds up with UV exposure. Time will tell.
Holy chit thats a big roll! How many feet is that? And it covers a stack nicely! Cash Larue I have found good luck with the black plastic from hardware stores. Its Not PVC, and comes in thicknesses up to 6 mil. It won't rot in the sun. I like the 25x10. I'll cut it the long way, and use 5' strip for top covers. On a few stax, I cut a 4' strip that went under the pallets, and the remaining 6' strip for the top. My thought is that the piece under will shed water faster, and will keep moisture from the ground from coming up to the wood. Rolls here $36 ish. TSC and most hardware stores have these. Sca
Not too long I suspect. UV chews it up pretty fast. I’d say you’ll get three years out of it if it’s on the stack and left alone. Set it and forget it. Maybe remove with a vacuum cleaner LOL
I'd be hard pressed to use something that doesn't last long. Good luck! Maybe being in some shade will get you more than 3-4.
I'll have to check out a roll of that plastic on my next TSC visit. How long have you had it on your stacks?
The edges where the sun hit it were rather weak and the plastic was starting to get crunchy. Im doubting itll last long but ill give it a shot. Id like to get some rubber roofing. BTW i didnt see any covers on your stacks Joe. Werent you using rubber?
Mike, Ive had the thinner stuff 3mil, on for a couple years. It ripped due to sharp edges on the wood. I started using 6 mil summer of 21 on everything. It seems to be holding up well enough so far. Sca
Stop fighting tarps and pull the trigger on some metal roofing.. First 25 sheets I bought were a steal at $5 per sheet. They came off an old barn in Vermont. It was a bit of a hard pill to swallow when I ponied up $40 per sheet for the next round and downright painful to pay $50 per sheet (marked down from $65 due to damage in shipping), but the metal roofing is EASY.. it stays in place and it will last longer than any of us will be alive. I will probably pass mine along to my children for their wood stacks..
Some of my stacks were covered. Some of the rubber is rolled up in the garage. When my mother was getting all her belongings back this past winter I used everything that had been on the wood brought into our homes as ground covers. I do need to get it back out.
I had almost a full roll of roofing underlayment remaining from my house construction and so gave it a try almost a year ago. Seems to be holding up well and I use a staple gun to keep it in place. About $75 at Lowes for a 125’ roll. Works well for weed control also.
Sister and BIL got a new rubber roof on Thursday. I asked if they saved the old rubber roof for me. They forgot I have some of the landscape weed material I got from my last score. Hope to get several years, most of the stack is in wooded areas.
Noticed you are close to Roxborough State Park. Hiked there a dozen times or more over the twelve years when I lived in Northern Co Springs. Beautiful area.
Yeah! I love Roxborough! I ride my mountain bike there all the time! Gotta watch for rattlers there though.
