I have 3 saws now a 260 a 361 and a 461. I have had a gnawing want for a 661. I have found a pair of them new for 1,500 dollars each. They are a few states away from me but I will be driving close by on a vacation in a month or so. They are CM's with 28" bars. How do those of you who have the 500 and a 661 compare them? I will admit to being old fashioned and not really a fan of computers on my chainsaws. Does $1,500 sound like a fair deal since they're not being produced anymore?
No, $1500 is too much for a 661. Surely you can buy one off the internet for less. $1350 should be the high end for it. I have used both saws, but have not used the 500 with a 28” bar. I have a 28” bar on my 661 and it powers through wood like a Stihl.
The 661 is Stihl’s current 90cc saw. Still being produced. A 500 is only 79cc. The 661 is 92cc and runs about 13cc better than a 500i
$1500 is way too high. BTW, you could always just send your 461 to get ported. It will run like a 661 but it will be lighter and will cost you way less. That's what I did. I'm very happy.
There is a nice looking MS660 Magnum listed over in PA for $1000...looks to have a 32" bar...even that $ seems strong to me
Thanks for all the replies I will get a hold of my local stihl dealer and check on a price to order a new one locally. What does a port job on a 461 cost and any recommendations on a shop to perform the work?
I'll +1 the recommendation to get the 461 ported, and +1 huskihl to do the work. Kevin worked over one of my saws and his reputation and work is top notch.
I'll agree with everyone, the price is too high. I got a killer deal on an 066 from a coworker. If the price was for 2 saws I'd buy.
Price seems high for new. As far as i know the 661 is stillbeing made. I found a screaming deal on a used one but passed on it. I own a 500 but have never used a 066/660/661. Dont process wood that big that often and my 460/462/500 suffice. Get your 461 ported and dont look back.
Another vote for adding Xtra Sausage ( XS ) to your 461 . You won’t regret it . Well , maybe a bit once you run it ,then pick up an unported saw . Then you’ll likely have the thought of porting THAT saw as well …
