I have my AP environmental students do a year end tree ID project. They have to properly ID 15 trees and do a short write up on each which includes max size, uses both past and present, and what environmental factors allow this tree to grow where it is (soil type, wetness, etc). I take them outside to the woods on campus to do most of their field work. Today I took them to a location I usually skip over and came across this tree that I don’t know what it is. My kids were surprised by this because they think I have every tree on campus memorized. Haha! Thbiggest one is about 5” in diameter and there’s about a half dozen of them in this little cluster. Any ideas?
I’m not so sure it’s honey locust. The leaflets look slightly serrated and thicker than the locust I’m used to seeing. Could be though.
Coffeetree maybe? Cut a twig and see if the pith is salmon colored. The leaves look bi-pinately compound so I don’t think yaupon holly either.
The leaf size and shape say honey locust but i cant say ive ever noticed the "ribs" on the leaves so not sure. Zoomed in on your leaf pic and i dont think it is HL. I could spot the larger ones by the bark. Smaller ones not so.
