Need help identifying a huge plastic container

I was at a friends this weekend processing our meat birds and saw a couple plastic containers he had.

I didn't take any pics, but he got them at a farm auction. They were blue plastic and square, approx. a 5 foot x 5 foot x 5 foot cube. I'm guessing around 1,000 gallons capacity. Open top. Bottom looked like a big Lego block. Open top. Really thick walls, like 1/2" thick plastic. Two side walls each had a hole in them around 3" across.

I can't locate any similar looking containers online to help identify them. Anyone know what they are called and/or used for.

I think IBC totes are 250 gallon? Wonder if they are strong enough to hold wood?

 

The most common IBC totes are 275 gallon and 330 gallon. I have a bunch of the 330's. Without the cage supporting them, they aren't all that rugged. These blue containers are about three times the size and the plastic is 3 times as thick.

 

Here in the UK they are called plastic stillages, if these are the same as you looked at?

Lots of different styles and colours available. Solid walls, to hold liquids, or vented walls. And forklift compatible bases.

 

Thank you sir. Pretty similar to the one with solid sides. His had smooth walls. He paid $75 apiece at a farm auction.

 

These are very similar as well. Except his had much higher sides. Like a 62" cube.

Yes. You wouldn't want to pay the list price!

 

If the bladder (plastic part) is removed from the tote (metal cage), they hold up pretty well but you would have to cut a hole(s) to insert/remove the wood. IF you cut the entire top off, they become really flimsy. And unless you want to drill hundreds of holes for ventilation, green wood won't season well in them.

They come in cardboard, and plastic for items that would put holes in cardboard.

Could they have been part of a modular leachen or dry well system and designed to be flipped upside down to work?

 

I know there is a place locally that has some big 2 piece blue crates (kinds like those, only bigger) they said parts came in...they want $50 for them...doesn't look like they've ever sold many over the years.

 

For that price I'd scoff them up. Could be handy for a number of things.
