With shoulder season around a month and a half away, the days are getting shorter here.....The past couple nights were chilly too, won't be too long now! We've still got lots of warm weather but it's coming!

So what's on the menu for your stove in the fall SS? I've been stacking all week and took a gander at the stack, looks like I'll be starting out with 3 yr seasoned ash, walnut, Norway maple and a bit of oak and cherry. By winter the burners will be on a steady diet of white oak, walnut and Norway maple. What's on your stoves menu for this fall?

Right where I want to be.
All stacked in the shed in order of expected use....starting with Pine and Spruce for SS.

Lots of maple this year, some cherry and an elm. The hard winter will get mulberry and honey locust.

    Perfect timing Scotty,
I was just thinking about this the other day while looking at the stacks. I'm walking up and down the five cords I have for this year looking when I realize my wood snobbery has backfired. I have little to no shoulder season wood. I have almost all white oak and black locust. I guess that's the drawback to being a wood snob. Oh well, I'll take it.

BV, I'll be in those shoes in 4 years....everything I've saved this year from my removals has been chestnut oak, pin oak, white oak and red oak. The "up" side to that "problem" is I'll probably only go through half as much wood and have to empty ash from the stoves two or three times the entire heating season!! :rofl: :rofl: :rofl: :thumbs:

There's a little of that in all of us here...lol

So there's a pile of pine splits and a pile of locust splits sitting at the curb with a "free to good home" sign on them....which pile do you take??

    Both... :)

I'm starting with some really dry cherry and then moving to a mixture of sycamore, oak, maple, sassafras, aspen and tulip. I'm looking forward to experimenting with the mix. :fire:

I'll be mostly chomping on red and white oak this year...got 3 year old pile off by itself, but I may dig into the main pile for some ash, hickory and of course some cherry.

Keep us posted on your results. Maybe we can do some different duration - BTU - ash tests from different species/mixed loads this winter. Most of that is already known but would be neat to see some real world results from owners of different stoves, like the BK and the IS stoves.....something to ponder...

Starting with pine and sycamore, then maple and cherry, then almost exclusively red oak. I figure I'll start burning in about 7 weeks, and 5-6 weeks after that it'll be all red oak that's been drying 2-3 years. I have around 20 cords on hand, and I think 18-19 is red or white oak.

And I have to say, as I'm new here, Scotty! 43 CORDS????!!!!! That's INSANE! You need your own special FHC Category!!

    "which pile do you take?"

Both is really the obvious answer here!

This SS we have some lovely seasoned Ash on the menu for the main course along with some nice Blue Spruce followed up with just a little Box Elder.
For the colder months we will be offering some bone dry Oak with a hint of Mulberry added in.
We also have Walnut to offer, but that vintage is just a little under seasoned as of right now.

    Welcome red oak!

Exchange the walnut for black birch and beech and make the white oak red and we have pretty much the same.

Probably both, cause I'd like to get some more lighter wood for the shoulder season...I'm getting loaded down with Honey Locust, Hedge, Oak, and Mulberry. But I'll be running Ash and Walnut through for a while, before I grab the heavy hitters....:fire:
