ID please

Got hired to clean up a small tree that has been dead long enough for the roots to rot off and blow over, threatening a small shed. I just figured it was elm until I started cutting.

 

I’m leaning towards Mulberry or possibly it’s cousin the Osage Orange. I think Chvymn99 might have a better idea than I do.

 

Certainly looks like mulberry to me. Great burning wood. Does throw sparks though but I enjoy that in the fireplace.

 

It's got huge grow rings....is that normal

 

I was hoping mulberry, probably should have saved more, I kept everything 3” and bigger.

 

Looks like it didn't want for roof water runoff. Probably helped with the huge rings/growth.

 

Im saying mulberry too. Kind of a weed tree based on my observations. Was the limb wood solid and not rotted? The dead ones ive encountered had solid limb wood as the heartwood is rather rot resisitant.

Nice little job and wood score to get! Cant beat getting free wood and getting paid to clean it up.

 

It was all solid. Must be pretty dense stuff, was kinda slow cutting even though the saw was throwing nice chips and not dust

 

Some of the mulberry i cut yesterday was dead with loose bark but the wood was solid. Your job reminds me of the little job i did in this thread.

Have you scored mulberry in the past or is this your first?

 

First that I know of although years ago I cut something yellowish for the stove at work. That was long before I got edumacated by you fine folks

 

Mulberry is very rot resistant and higher on the btu charts than oaks

 

That’s a good score, I agree with the others it looks to be Mulberry

Mulberry is a great heat wood good cookwood My biggest problem with Mulberry is the 3yr drying time. Others will say 2yrs but that must be in a very dry,sunny, windy location .
