My local pellet supplier is Ace/Moore Lumber. They’ve been having a hard time keeping up with the wood pellet demand for the last couple of years. Sometimes they can’t get any. A guy working the lumber yard told me that they compete with the European market to get pellets - and Europeans are willing to pay a lot more for American pellets than we are in the US. As we all know, money talks.

I fully expect Putin to stop natural gas to Europe this winter as revenge tactics. So prices will increase for the unprepared and poor. Thanks Backwoods Savage for getting me on 3 year plan:handshake:

Looked down that rabbit hole about 16 yrs ago, the cost of equipment, storage area for drying and storage of final product was a bit mind boggling.

I'm sure some are doing it on a small scale, but it doesn't seem like it would have a great return on investment timeframe.

Solar panels and mini-split heat pump system would seem a far more efficient system, with a quicker ROI.

Ummm, I’m a bit slow… so today we are advocating for a paternalistic government that imposes regulations upon the private sector to manipulate prices?

edit: I think there are valid reasons for exceptions to pure capitalism, and was checking, maybe poorly, to see how others felt. In particular, I would put food, heat, and shelter in protected status (and not coincidentally, fuel and food were both mentioned).

The world markets are too intertwined for me to think I know what is best; I expect there will be a lot of pain ahead, particularly for those in less fortunate circumstances. I saw maybe the highest gas prices I’ve ever seen tonight, but I’ve also been to the poverty-ridden settlements ringing Lima, Peru. I truly am not in a place to complain.

On that first part man, I feel the back comment. Sometimes getting out of bed, getting out of the car.. often just putting on socks- I get some terrible / but quick sharp pains. Not fun. Feel for the guy.

Regarding the plant, off the top of my head I don't know and probably never knew. I looked it up and after reading it I still really don't know. It's a little over my head. All I know for sure is in the mid 90's when my great uncle Joe was still alive I was visiting him in Canada and he was explaining that hemp socks were the farmers best friend- and that was always in the back of my mind- so a couple decades later every time I come across and article about hemp it just sounds like a no brainer.

we already have a paternalistic government that manipulates the prices. We are seeing the effects of that now.

    Yup!
I am supplying an older friend with wood, have off and on for years.
    Never anything in trade.
But this year, my bargain with him is that I can store some of my wood at his place. I've brought in/stored four cord of my own there in the last few weeks. And there's room for more. I'll weed wack around the stacks (mine and his) and keep the front of the house area weedwacked...he does zero maintenance so I keep my stacks maintained, and his lawn looks a little tidier.

It's the 'theres room for more' bit that gets me going. The second row probably will see a couple more cord before the summer is out.

Since it's ts all for use 3 years out, so a bunch are larger splits and unsplit rounds...makes stacking faster.

I've got a huge tree job I'm picking away at, and the odd misc score that just shows up now and again (three of those this year so far).

Not at all, Lodgepole Pine, $225 cord split, a bit less for bucked or whole logs, and add a $100 trip fee.

We used mostly sawdust in the coops except for the nests where we used straw.
