Ive had wrens keeping me company while processing wood. Ive watched them forage in the cold. For a small bird they can be noisy little chits.

We have wrens that next in a bird house we hang by our deck. Yup, they are very noisy.

Why not noodle them? That cant hook looks mighty familiar!

 

I cooould noodle em, but I have a skid steer, chains, log tongs, a hydraulic splitter and a 13 year old granddaughter that still likes to help grandpa. That’s why!!

Hackberry is some heavy stuff! How’s it split for you Sandhillbilly ?

 

I have pretty good luck with it. I think the key is not trying to split it too green. But you can’t leave it in the rounds for a long time either or it starts getting punky. ( 6 months to just under a year seems to work out for big rounds of 20” and bigger) My biggest complaint about it is that it always has “warts” or bumps and it’s seldom to get a straight piece 18” long, so it don’t make those super pretty stacks.
I hope to get these broke down to manageable chunks in the next couple weeks, then finish splitting by early fall after I get my stacking area moved and rebuilt.

keep in mind, “ how does it split for you?” Is kinda a relative question…. I deal with lots of elm!

 

Good to know. Last Hack I split was green and really hard to hand split, not as bad as elm. I won’t to process elm unless it’s standing dead with no bark. I’m interested to see how the now split dry Hack I have splits into smaller splits. How long does your Hack take to dry?

 

Those rounds in the picture I’ll probably give at least 2 full years after the final split and stack. This is the first real good HB score since I have joined up here. Cut a couple pickup loads out of a pile of logs 2 summers that the owner said was there for over a year “so it’s good and dry and ready to burn this winter”! Yeah… right! NOT!
I guess bottom line is I don’t have enough experience with it to say that it will dry in x amount of time. Seems like it will dry quickly but if it’s taken alive I’ll probably always figure 2 years.

 

Just checked the FHC BTU and drying chart. Says 8 months. I don’t have a MM, but by density alone I’d say the Hack I’ve had CSS for a year is no where near ready. I think I throw a couple Hack uglies on my next fire pit and see how it burns .

 

Ive come to question that chart myself. I guess it all depends on drying conditions.
