I'm currently running a stihl ms 250 and a box store splitter. Not quite glaciers but pretty slow. I was wondering if I upgraded to faster equipment would fuel usage per cord also go up. Has anyone done a study on fuel burned vs output for chainsaws and splitters?
No scientific study, but mtronic stihls are more fuel efficient. It was noticeably different transitioning from 200t to 201t. I can cut a bunch of wood with the 261c between fillups. The 462 is not as thirsty as my 044. My splitter has a 12hp motor and I’d estimate one gallon per 1.5-2 cord split.
I run a few Mtronic Stihls and the gas usage is better than non Mtronic. Ive never actually tested fuel usage though. I go through two gallons of mix in 4-6 weeks on average. My bigger saws love fuel, but can cut some serious wood. A saw upgrade is always Nice. Might i suggest an MS362c to compliment your 250. It can run a 25" bar for bigger wood, but is sweet with a 20" bar. Pricey saw but a pro model!
I don't cut much. A 25" bar is ioverkill for what I do. I was thinking a 20" bar in the $600-700 range. With current inflation that will be the ms 170 by the 4th of July.
I cut a 25" log with the 20" bar on my 500 earlier this week. At that budget a 362 is out. A 391 is a decent saw at the high end of your budget. In the farm/ranch category and 64cc's
I’d get an MS261 or 550xp. The fuel efficiency comes from motor design changes, not so much the mtronic. Most new saws use stratified technology, which are about 20-30% more fuel efficient.
