I lost a hen to a raccoon last night. I close the coop door every night after they go in but was finishing a movie with my wife so I was about 45 minutes late and it was solid dark.

He got in and got one but I surprised him in time to save the rest.
Now the gun goes out with me. He’s on borrowed time.

My wife caught this guy in our backyard yesterday as the sun was coming up. He was interested in my rabbit as well as my chickens. Time to double check around the coop and run for potential entry points. I’ll be adding another layer of chicken wire underneath the rabbit hutch later today.

He’ll need a relative to continue due to a sudden ingestion of a .380 hollow point early this morning.

Don't have to worry about chicken predators till next year. Me and 2 neighbors just put 97 meat birds in the freezer this past weekend.

I found some 8-12 week old chickens on the northern border, they do shipping (it will cost a lot but everything does here), and I have a reluctant blessing from WWW. With one exception, the coop cannot be attached to the house . I've not brought up the idea of a cage with a doggie door in the garage for nights, we'll see how that goes   . So, any recommendations on the safest coop with raccoons and martins here?

Also regarding the automatic door, I saw on the internet some for $199 and much more, is there a preferred one here?

    PS, I'm thinking 3 hens.

Good Luck... Coons just make sure everything is "welded wire" in. It doesn't take much of a gap for them to get in... I learned the hard way not just once but twice... Your coop just needs ventilation, block the wind, food and water.

Smokey is recovering from being being up well past his bedtime. Got to scanning and couldn't stop I also played around with the full auto correct mode damm scanner is full of goodies. I's still asleep give me a day or so to find the store I used to buy chicken junk at. I put my flock down in 2017.

    Is this correct?

I chatted on a chicken group last night, some people attach hardware cloth to the bottom too for a smaller unsupervised area, sounds like a good idea.
