Any thoughts? It’s been down for a few years, and I’m in the PNW. Alder? Cherry? Homeowners have no idea. Thanks in advance for your expertise!

Looks like the whorl of a conifer. Not familiar with PNW conifers though.

Looks like wet wood to me!

Maybe wild cherry on the bottom pieces. The knotty chunk far left looks sprucey to me.

Looks like something I'd turn down.

Looks like Cherry to me but I would want to dig around in the pile & check things out, maybe split a couple of pieces to check for any rot.

Looks like really bad Doug fir, and or possibly some wild cherry.

I agree with the above. Any Alder in there won't be any good. Need to take the top off and get a closer look. If it didn't have lots of cherry I wouldn't bother with it.

Looks like fir and birch. If it's south of snohomish county, then maybe not birch and possibly cherry instead.
It all looks wet, moldy, and full of knots. I'd pass.

I thought pine and birch also.
If thats birch, unsplit, I'd leave it.

It’s in Issaquah. I don’t have time to check it out, and instead I’m picking up a decent load of green dogwood tomorrow morning. Supposedly tough to split…I guess I’ll find out!

Ya looks like the cherry we usually see around here but way too far gone. Dogwood is about the easiest thing to split. Where did you find the dogwood.?

If the Issaquah cherry is still around next weekend maybe I’ll grab any good stuff that’s been covered by the tarp. (Wait, is that why they call it cherry picking? ) I think I mentioned I’m desperate for 2022 wood… I’m looking good for 2023-2026.

The dogwood popped up on one of the free sites last night and I pounced. That’s pretty much the only way I get wood. There does seem to be a lot less coming available around here lately...have you noticed that?

I have noticed that. I usually will travel as far north as Everett or as far south as 50th st. in Seattle and east as far as Bothell for premium stuff. I'm usually just picking from Lynnwood, Edmonds, mlt/lfp and shoreline. I only have enough room to stock for one year, including my stuff and what I sell. Max out at about 15 cords. I'm done for this year but always am watching. There has definitely been a drop in what's available, quantity and quality. Didn't see the dogwood on my sites. Craigslist, OfferUp and Facebook. Just curious if I missed it from one of my areas.

This was near Northgate…I took the best half of the dogwood but was short on time and had to bolt. Tree service guy cut it really short—-I grabbed all the decent stuff, which wasn’t too much.

Just saw the ad. It's hard to find dogwood that hasn't been destroyed by termites or some type of beetle. Rough looking stuff.

Yeah I was pretty happy with this pickup—it looked like an older tree with some rot in the middle in one section, but otherwise the wood was good. It probably wasn’t the straightest/biggest tree, so there weren’t a lot of clean rounds, and some of what was there was bucked in pieces that were too small. No major signs of termites. But hey, free
You motivated me to process the wood today. There were a few trunk rounds with live termites or punky centers, but in the end at least 90% was solid, clean wood. I sprayed the stacked wood with insecticide for good measure.
All in all a great little micro-score (1/4 cord?), less than 10 minutes off of my intended path. And you were right—split really easy.
