So I'm getting some ash from a guy and he also has a small pile of Hackberry logs. Is Hackberry worth splitting and selling as firewood? Thanks, Steve.
Yes. It is a solid B level firewood imo. It is not oak, BL, hickory, hedge, etc. but is better than a lot of other soft woods. It also dries fast and is easy to split...
Take it! A bit below white ash in BTU power. But get it split and off the ground as it will begin to rot quickly left on the ground in rounds or logs.
I burn quite a bit of it, everything the others have said is true. My biggest complaint with it is that it is bumpy, warty and never has a straight piece 18” long, making it a little tough to stack neatly. I have over 8000 pounds of the stuff that I need to get CSSed asap
I agree with everyone but it don’t always split easy. The last I had I let sit for 6 months and it wasn’t bad to split. I had cut some in the spring a few years ago and split right away and it wasn’t fun.
yep pretty stringy splitting when green, starts getting soft if left unsplit for too long. It’s kinda a fine line
Dont pass it up. I must be lucky, can't really recall having an issue splitting hackberry and I'm a hand splitter.
I have heard others say the same thing about splitting; never had that problem here (knock on wood), and I have split a lot of it. Murphy's Law says the next hackberry I get will be like splitting elm.
Infact I have a big o' Hackberry in my back yard that will be all firewood in either this winter or next. Its already shed one big limb and I just cut two limbs off while rebuilding the fence so that if they did fall it wouldn't kill the fence. Its got the big army ants, which is killing it.
