I'm going to be expanding my wood processing area. I'm curious what, if any, ground covering you might lay down; stone, splitting remnants, etc. I have 3/4" stone in one area, but I'm not too impressed. Doesn't make clean up any easier.
Wood chips from my chipper and others. Got about 3/4 of an acre covered with em. 8-12" deep. Nice soft dry surface to work on, and if you run a chain into it, no immediate damage.
If I want the area cleaned up after a long splitting session, I lay down some rubber roofing material and work over that. Most times it's just ground and I rake.
9.00 per ton sandstone from a somewhat close quarry for a base. I need to top it with some gravel or limestone as it has broken down on the surface and turns to a sandy type mud. I plan to expand the hard packed surface this summer if time allows. I hate working in, and driving the tractor, in mud.
An old concrete pad, used to be a garage or something here on the 'stead. I run the machine there. Its not so good for hand splitting, so I've gotten in the habit of splitting at the scrounge where I can.
I work on asphalt. I was considering getting a few of those large horse mats that are 3/4" but 3 years in using just asphalt I think it's fine.
Not so far, cold enough up here that termites aren't a huge issue. Processing area is well away from structures as well.
