Late last fall mother nature gave us two windstorms that were inventory helpers so I c/s/s most of that before the snow came in, that was a northern New York GTG.
I took time off from anything firewood related and washed both vehicles and spent time on the porch with the wife, dog and a coffee.
Thanks yooperdave , hopefully I can do the wife's vehicle twice a month and mine once. It seems since I painted the front porch a few years back, we spend more time on it. Last year we hardly had any bugs so we spent more time on it than the back porch which is screened in. We had a low of 25.5 this morning, what did you have? Saranac Lake New York had 18 for a low.
I finished of the stack of ironwood, beech and maple today, after that I bucked up a pine log that was down and split some kindling, it should be ready for fall since the log was down since 2019. I grabbed some ironwood from picture 2968 and then split the rest of the hardwood from the same area I split from yesterday to finish the stack.
Since I have 10 of our 12 face cord of shoulder season wood c/s/s, I'll head up to finish this maple and roll and throw it down the hill. There's a beech that has some rot in the base of the trunk I might fell too, it will be up in the area I park the rhino before I walk down to the maple.
With the temps we had in January, I should've burned more than a face cord. T.Jeff Veal , it would be nice if some of the trees mother nature puts weren't on the side of hills, the old knees feel it. It seems like it's been since 2018 (when I cleared for the new garage) that we've had this much wood, it feels good especially with the price of oil, propane and gas. My goal was always getting whatever stacks were opened filled, but that gets harder each year. buZZsaw BRAD , your saws must be wondering what in the hell is going on, they're use to constant work.
I finished the biggest part of two uprooted maples, the chain was cutting pretty good until I hit a pocket of dirt inside the tree. Everything was rolled or thrown down the hill. The last picture 2977 are the from the first tree before I hit the pocket of dirt. After doing the above, I took a ride around the property, everything seemed fine so I came back to this topped off maple from our last windstorm. In picture 2982 & 83, it looks like a small woodpecker was after the area where it broke off from the wind, 2991 is the area where it broke off.
The hardwood is getting less and less each year but the softwood I can't keep up with. One good windstorm and the uprooted hardwood inventory can go up.
Since you ate pretty good at your GTG, we have some old dog food she won't eat, drop three trees and it's all yours.
Tonight and tomorrow we have a bunch of rain coming in, half inch to an inch along with some cooler temps coming in so we put in a small load of ash. This should be our last wood be put in and then we'll call it a year. Usually we start burning our shoulder season wood between Sept. 15 thru the 25.
