Mill I have dealings with is shutting it's doors after 100+ years. Cleaning out all of the miscellaneous saved parts and accessories they found this. A old electric Stihl.
Kind of a heritage piece there. Stihl got their start with electric saws and have always offered high-powered electrics. Just better known for the gas stuff.
They also built pneumatic saws for underwater use. Dolmar actually produced the first portable gas saws. IIRC they only predate Stihl's early gas saws by a year or so.
A bunch of production related power tools were made to be run on high frequency 3 phase power supplies. Gave you the speed of a brush motor and the durability of a 3 phase motor.
Here is one in action: They also used to make the E30 model. Three phase. The windings can be swapped star (wye) or delta, for 240v or 415v in the UK (220v or 380v in Europe). Slow chain speed but lots of torque.
This followed me home today. Not sure what I'm going to do with it. First a good cleaning and try to find any info. All help is appreciated.
The guys at Chainsaw Collectors will be able to help, I think. Stihl ESL - Chainsaw Collectors.se You are going to need a three phase supply if you want to run it.
I could see that heavy sucker being part of a firewood processor in a stationary mount. Possible like cutting up slabwood. That stuff can get overwhelming and even selling at a cheap price is maybe better than just a burn pile.
That first vid is impressive. W/ a proper chain that thing would get through pretty darn quick. Neat old piece, especially if you get it running.
Any standard 3 phase motor will work as a phase converter. 220v single phase into 2 of the leads and the 3rd lead will put OUT the 3rd phase.
I was also going to suggest a VFD with a single-phase input as an option but at aprox $300+, it's certainly not as cheap or as available (used that is) as a 3PH motor. But if you WERE able to scab one used, that'd be the ticket!
