There is a pond next to a field at work that some beavers moved into and are flooding it out. So the land owner he rents from talked to the boss and the boss asked me if I knew anyone the traps. I said I do! So I finally had a chance and put out 2 330 traps yesterday. Checked on it this morning and got a muskrat in the one and probably a 30lb beaver in the other. Got them out and reset the traps. First time using traps, I set snair poles up last year and got 3 on a different pond. So I was happy to have both traps full in one night just winging it. I tell ya though, carrying a 30lb beaver through the swamp then across a 60 acre field to the truck is a heck of a work out!
Nice! Those conibears do a number…. And they don’t discriminate… you trip it and it snaps…Do you have a set tool? They are handy…
I need to get a set tool, I am struggling compressing the springs by hand, someone who has trapped with them before would probably shake there head at me , but I managed My formal training on how and we're to place them... Youtube
I got to admit, I was walking out there figuring I would find empty traps and was when I seen they were sprung. Especially since I almost went swimming setting the one trap yesterday and filled my boot full of cold pond water. Always enjoy getting outside and trying something new, may look like a monkey err, "playing" with a football learning but no one starts as a expert. And as they say, "If you can't be handsome at least be handy"... So I have to learn a lot of stuff and stay handy
I'll post a picture of mine. Leverage is your friend. My uncle designed his. Easy and fairly cheap. A drill hole, a bolt, and a couple of notches from a grinder.
I skinned them out and rolled the hides up and heavily bagged them and put them in the freezer. I will be sending them out to be tanned. The misses wants a pair of beaver fur boots, so I am going to find someone to make her a pair with the hinds I have got after I get them tanned. The muskrat hide I will get tanned as well. That would be awesome, thank you
A length of stout rope 4-5 ft long with a loop big enough to get your boot in is a good to have with you ( on your person ) when dealing with conibear traps. Just in case you need to get your arm or hand out of one. I’ve never had the need to use it, but it’s sage advice to have it
Very good advice! Thank you. Oh I am! At this point I don't even take the spring safetys off tell I have it set in the water
Hey, hey - this is a family friendly site The guy that trap's on my land uses the beaver for coyote bait after he skinned it.
Here’s my leverage for the springs. 4 ft longs X 2” wide x 1/4” thick. It allows for easier compression of the spring and allows for easier safety set.
Actually, there is a ton that do, I have never tried to cook one. We have a Redfox hanging around our house right now, so I cut some meat off and set it out for her and her kits. There is a lot of people that trap muskrat for the meat as well. I like that! Thanks for the idea
