There are loaded car and truck threads and a UTV thread, but I don't remember seeing one dedicated to ATV scrounging, so now there is. I enjoy seeing other member's pics of their ATV scrounges and how their rigs are set up. Could go either way as to whether this should be in the Wood Pile or C&PE threads, however this is more about the scrounging than the ATV.

Not looking for old pics from previous years. Hopefully others will post some pics of their 2022 and beyond ATV scrounges.

It has been a slow start to scrounging this year, but I have been able to get out a few times with the ATV. Went out this afternoon to cut down a standing dead ash and ended up with three small donor beech trees as well (they were collateral damage). Started raining just as I finished dragging the 4' lengths down to the trail, so I'll have to go back later to get the timber. Great day to be in the woods, nonetheless. The other pics are from scrounges over the last couple weeks. In the last month I've been able to scrounge some beech, ash, red maple, and white birch.

If I had one I’d be scouring the woods for Hornbeams, Sassafras, Mulberry, BL, Hickory, Cherry and Dogwood. Things could get out of control pretty quickly. I’m adjacent to 80 acres of woods and I know the owners.

Nice. I have about a dozen or so trees mapped out to try and scrounge before the heat and bugs show up. Will probably start with this beech blowdown next. It's up a fairly steep and gnarly section of trail however there are at least three more blowdowns in the general area so it's a good spot. I have the owner's permission to access a 126-acre property however there are only limited trails and most of the terrain is very steep and inaccessible by ATV so I'll take what I can get. It all adds up by the end of the year and cuts back on the amount I have to scrounge from the national forest.

Nice looking rounds. And, nice looking woods. :salute:

You have an area that looks to be more deciduous than conifer. Most of your region leans towards conifer, from my experience up there.

Keep your cutting area a secret.

I've been posting some ATV scrounges on other threads over the last couple years but figured it was time we had our own.

Not 2022. Still processing wood I scrounged in 2018 :) But the log arch is next on the list of toys to be used once I’ve split everything I’ve already got. Time to stop scrounging roadside and get back in the woods.
You could say the atv is a work horse and a creature comfort 307D6286-869A-4A7D-A351-D2672B185054.jpeg 9309063A-81C5-404F-87A9-CBDBBED2BBCF.jpeg 39016A66-F93A-48D8-B06A-41CA63BF1A59.jpeg 1CC54AB5-94FB-43D9-B336-49AFDCE7D865.jpeg 0610F26C-92C4-45BE-8353-19321C868C38.jpeg

Yep the title had me thinking that also. Was about ready to offer up one or maybe two.

Couple loads of dead standing Elm. Have a little trouble with big loads like this if I have to navigate any steep areas. I think I have more weight in the trailer than I have in the horse.[IMG][IMG]

No recent pictures but have used atv for getting firewood for years. They work great in the woods.

There is definitely a good mix of trees on the property. The area closest to my home has a ton of hardwoods and with the winds we have here (especially during the winter), there are always blowdowns. The trick is being able to get to some of them (there are countless more downed trees higher up but no way to realistically access them). Some of the other sections of land are heavy in softwoods so I'm just lucky that the area with the trails goes through a large plot of hardwoods. I will take down some of the standing dead softwoods (mostly hemlocks) as a favor to the property owner but that's ok, I like hemlock for SS. As for keeping it a secret, luckily I'm the only one who has access/cutting permission other than the owner.

They don't call it the granite state for nothing! Definitely have to keep an eye out when cutting downed trees because those boulders are everywhere! As for the 400, I'm enjoying it however I find myself going back to the 362 for a lot of the stuff. Maybe after a few more tanks of fuel through the 400 I'll be more impressed with it.

They definitely come in handy for more than just firewood. My 84-year-old uncle got a black bear last year in the area where I am firewood scrounging, and we were able to drive right up to it with the ATV and trailer. I got mine on a far side of the same property about an hour earlier however there are no trails, so had to drag it out the old-fashioned way.

I almost picked up a log arch early last year (some of your older pics were part of my research). I finally ruled it out as a 'nice-to-have' item and couldn't justify the expense because a lot of the scrounges I get would be difficult to use the log arch with and if I ever lost access to this property, I wouldn't have much of a use for the arch. Great piece of equipment though.

Decent weather today so I was able to get back out this afternoon and buck up the stuff I had dragged to the trail the other day. Ended up with two decent trailer loads and the round pile is starting to add up. When I went back to get all the gear, I bucked up a few small, long-dead red maple simply because they were right where I had been working and I had the gear. Most people would just pass that stuff by however I like having those small hard-as-a-rock pieces mixed in the stacks and it helps clean up the property I have been given access to.
