Looks a lot like silver maple. Was it hard to split?

Does not initially appear to be hickory to me. Most times hickory is a little stringy and harder to split, like Eric asked about.

It is definitely not honey locust. I have split a lot of honey locust in the past

Could be a hybrid of some sort. Definitely does not look like any hickory I’ve seen and I’m from NJ.

Agreed. The last load I got had a few pieces colored similar though. Might have been the beginnings of rot. The bark in the OP’s pictures (subjectively) was vaguely reminiscent. In between the young smooth stage and more shaggy mature stage.

My initial thought was honey locust based on bark, but with closer inspection i say red maple.
It can be easy or hard to split. If the ends dry out and start to check it gets really tough to crack. Sometimes with twisty grain.

I’ve been thinking this is a HL, but the bark is different from the OP’s pic

Op looks like honey locust to me. The split also shows the lighter honey colored outer ring
