Broke out the old war wagon and enlisted some not so enthusiastic helpers this morning to go back and pick up some large rounds from yesterday's adventure. The largest one was 23" across. All of them were bigger than I wanted to roll out up hill and lift into a trailer. Also didn't feel like noodling to make them a little more manageable. The wind was blowing hard enough there was no escaping the chips and dust. Osage has got to be the heaviest wood to manhandle that I have ever dealt with. Still working on my 10 dollar a tree score. The helpers attitudes changed when we got there and they got to play, and help run the tommy gate switches. Edit: I have nothing against noodling. I've actually done plenty of it and actually like seeing the ribbons pile up. The hedge is so tough I didn't feel like it would be worth it.
I always say I'm done with the big rounds then when I'm splitting them and realize ive got 20 splits and the other half of the round is still hanging from the crane I'm like wow, das a lot o wood.
They are great when they wanna be. Osage is almost all I've been cutting on for a while now. I had orange chips everywhere yesterday due to the winds. I mean everywhere.
Looks like your helpers still had fun. Thank goodness you have the lift gate or else you would have left your berries there!
Wind does make the saw chips tough on the eyes. Seems there’s no escaping them no matter which you you stand
Great pics. Some sweet looking rounds...and kids! Have you tried to section them with a maul? Sledge and wedge? Doesnt it split rather easily?
I never have tried sectioning them. It seems to split well most of the time. Some of the bends or crooks or pieces with limbs coming out of them are a little more difficult to deal with. You may be ashamed of me but I don't take a sledge or maul or splitting wedges with me. The sledge I probably should take though.
Dont feel bad as i had two wedges in the cab for God knows how long. Took them out and now cant find them. Needed one recently. I carry the Isocore maul almost always in the back.
I’ve thought many times that a tommy lift would be great for firewooding. But I believe this is the first time I’ve seen or heard mention of one at FHC
I sure enjoy it. Its amazing how much it gets used. Had it for years. Picked up an old truck bed trailer last year that had one on it too. Some new hydraulic oil and grease and it works just dandy. Definitely a back saver.
