We've had a couple leaking air mattresses around for a few years. I haven't been very successful at patching air mattresses, it seems like they're always leaking at the seams. Instead of just throwing them away, my wife came up with the idea to use them to cover our firewood. They're 5' X 6.6', which gives me 13 feet of coverage for one mattress. I ended up slicing them on three sides, and I have to say these things should last a few years. This is as much a shout out to my wife, as it is for the idea of using old air mattresses to cover wood.
The woman was doing a deep clean of her condo. Found a stack of never used shower curtains. I thought about it
I sliced up a water bed mattress that a buddy was replacing. The 4 pieces have been covering wood for ~5yrs. They get real stiff in cold temps.
Think its a great idea. Not sure how long they'll tolerate the the sun. But should get a few years out of them
I used a old tent, cut up the roof I’d been keeping for almost 40 yrs, yes, that’s correct forty yrs! lol it covers my “chunk pile” now. Also saved the heavy duty floor, which is very heavy duty, even has the old tent peg tie downs still in place!
Tents are designed to be outside. Air mattresses are not suppose to be exposed to the elements. It may last many years, it may last a few years not sure how it will hold up.
I used a shower curtain liner for about a year and a half on small a pile of chestnut oak. It got torn up pretty bad around the corners. Probably would've worked better if I had a sheet of plywood on the top of the stack first. I also tried some clear plastic sheeting that I scrounged. I think it was the stuff you put down on the floor when you're painting a room. It lasted for a summer, then one day after a rainstorm it melted apart and I was picking up plastic scraps around the yard for weeks afterwards. I'm guessing we had acid rain that day?
