Controlled burn of a small 1.5 acre lot south of the house. It rained about 1.5 inches over 2 days. Ground is totally saturated. One mild day with humidity around 80% and we still got a burn like this. Slight breeze up to 5 mph and humidity around 45% when we started the burn and increased to 65% as sun set

Mowed 4 foot boundary around burn area before the rain. Had a water hose and 4 kids helping with boundary control.

Still got to talk to rural fire department after some one reported no one watching it. Fire department was excellent to talk too. We will call ahead next time.

Well, I was going to haul away the stump grindings from the big ash tree in the back yard, but it's snowing, and has been all am. Maybe tomorrow?

Tonight we are going out to dinner with friends of ours that are leaving for Florida for a month on Thursday. I'll get some stuff done around the house, inside, before that though.

3 hours. Couple new holes for lag eyelets that hold ropes. And a lot of new zip ties = happy hens. Was able to salvage all of it. The wet snow/ice we had a couple times had taken the predator bird netting down. The chickens are happy to be out of the barn coop.

A few months back (before Christmas) we would be visited by a red fox after dark. It would come up on the deck. I started leaving out bits of leftovers for it and found out that a slice or two of peperoni or hard salami seemed to be favorited by it. Over the next few months, it would show up during daylight (early evening) hours.

Well, word has spread about the handouts. First one racoon, then two racoons at a time. One racoon and fox at the same time but the fox wouldn't stick around too very long at all.

Then, a huge skunk. Didn't bother the racoons as they didn't seem to mind, but no more fox.

At that point, no more feed for the fox since it was being intercepted by "others". (There goes the neighborhood!)

I still feed the birds and the racoons still show up to eat the leftovers that fall to the ground from the feeder.

Today, I checked the north side of the deck and found a hole dug out to gain access underneath the deck!

Tonight, I'll lay out a pile of seed in the snow away from the deck and once those two danged racoons are at it, I'll run them off and fill in the tunnel that was dug out.

After that, I think it'll be a little fine shot of a .22 shell.

Had one of those busy days.

Got up and went shopping. Took daughter out to lunch. Got home and mulched asparagus. Went to son's baseball game. Got home and sealed deck on trailer. Cleaned up yard and barn a little. Made dinner for kids and cleaned up kitchen. Making a big strip steak for the wife and I to share for date night

I unintentionally walked into a possible job today. Ran into the American Greetings stocker lady at the supermarket while buying WWW's Birthday card, caught eyes, said hello, mentioned I did Hallmark for a few years. I sure would like to do it, like 20 hours per month on my chosen hours. I'd get out of the house, bit of contact with other people in person, and a tad of a sense of normalcy (vs being out here for weeks at a time between trips to town). Idk, I had on old school Adidas tennis and could not feel my feet by the time I left, just my weight in my heels as I walked. I could try shoes with thicker soles, not sure I could walk on heat packs. I really want to do this but... I'll have to weigh the mental health boosts vs. cold floors and breaking even on gas to/from town.

    and Happy Birthday WWW :)

It was sunny with a mild breeze today. Took the dog out for a ride. He loves to ride and I enjoyed the sun. I think it was about 50F which is just fine with me. When I sit in the sun with a shirt jacket on, I am really comfortable.

Do you have woodchucks? They are quick to dig like that.

Yesterday I was cutting some wood and a neighbor showed up. While we were talking, a woodchuck came out from under one woodpile. He didn't seem bothered by us but it bothered me not having a rifle with me.

Before we moved from the old place, there seemed to be woodchucks every year. Under the storage shed and wood pile of course. They went away by use of a trap in the burrow that was made by them. Wasn't really supposed to shoot right there. Activist liberal cry face neighbor would have been all over that I'm sure.

Where I'm at now, there is no evidence of woodchucks.

Besides that, it is still way too early for them to be out up here. Too much snow for them yet.

I do have a melt ring around the house....wide enough to walk on....thats a good sign!

I'm sure that little bit of digging was from a racoon.

My plan worked like a charm. They hit the seed pile in the yard; 99 let me know they were there; I ran them up a tree (I stayed on the deck) and then filled in the burrow.

No attempts to re-open it overnight and the "restaurant has closed for the spring". :handshake:
