The New York State brush burning ban starts tomorrow so I took care of what I had today. buZZsaw BRAD , picture 2820 is some Chicken Parm the wife made on the 12, the rest are of the fire and deer hanging around today.
Parm looks very good. She loves it. Ive had turkeys close by but no deer. Although this one at a score really caught me off guard while i was scrounging.
I started bucking up some pine we've had from the clearing for the new garage in 2018, the best of the worst will get stacked and the rest will be for burning in the outside fireplace. In picture 2839, you can see the trails still have ice on them.
I took the Mahindra 4540 down to plow out the entrance so I could take a ride back in, once that was done I jumped in the rhino and did a check of the area we call up top. Not much came down over the winter but we do have a widowmaker. The brook is moving pretty good with all the rain we had along with the snow melt.
It was a good start on getting some firewood, the beech was still off the ground ( a small beech was holding it up) I'm hoping for a face cord out of what was down, I still have to fell what's still standing. I shoveled part of the trail before I went up the trail, three nice hemlocks were blocking the sun to that area but the trail is ok until mother nature does the rest. The last picture is some of what I shoveled out of the trail.
I had planned on felling some ash but the wind had the tops rocking back & forth so I decided on some smaller ironwood that the tops were damaged or bent over (growing towards the forest floor) I think it took longer clearing all the dead chit out of the way so I could get the rhino and the trailer back to the first two. The third ironwood I saw on my way out, it was uprooted some and the top was in another tree. Picture 2871 is a dead maple that I'll need to get.
Windy day here too, nice. How is the mud? PITA to clear prep but all part of the job. Do you get much on the way of bigger trees? 16"+
The trails and the areas that I've been on are dry, we do have certain areas when we've had a wet spring, I'll stay off. We have some good size trees but the majority of the time I can buck up what I'm working on with an 18 inch bar. Hopefully this next rain (just over three quarters of an inch) will open up the rest of the trails so I can see what mother nature put on the ground.
We had rain all day here. Not hard rain more of a sprinkle than anything. Just all day long. Too much snow left to even think about heading into the woods; I pity the guys collecting sap!
Before this last storm that hit the east coast, Syracuse was down 51 inches from their average snowfall and they didn't get much from the storm. We didn't have that much snow either but when we did get it, we received freezing drizzle or rain after.
It was a day spent splitting and stacking some 2018 pine, picture 2882 is what was stacked before today.
Good looking stacks! Making progress. I see a lot of FHCer's use those T posts for stacking against. How well do stacks hold up using them? Any issues?
Thanks buZZsaw BRAD , after this stack is finished I only have another six face cord for a total of twelve before I'm finished the shoulder season wood, we burn six face cord a year inside. Since we started stacking we've had three t-post fail because I didn't reset it, not bad for all the stacking we've done. We're all sand here so I'm not dealing with any rocks.
