Well I got another axe head and this one was rusted very bad. When I cut into the bottom of it I found an inch long crack coming from the front of the eye. Welded it up and ground it to shape and this is what I ended up with. I got this one sharp enough to cut paper.

I split some wood with it today and it works very well but I am afraid the leather guard I put on there is too soft of leather and not thick enough. I tore it within a short period of use.

The handle is 27 inches and made from oak.

You did a great job on that ax. It looks great! You might want to learn how to wrap paracord around it. It's the best thing I have found.

I did go back and wrapped some paracord around it with epoxy. I agree it does work better.
I thought I would try the leather but it does not hold up very well.
I also got a hold of some shrink tubing and I am going to try that on another axe as well.

I've seen some shrink tube that isn't used for electrical work but for rad hoses instead of a gear clamp, seems pretty tough
Wonder how that would stand up

It did not have a name on it anywhere. Usually if they do not have any markings on them they become fair game for my projects.
