It looks like box elder. Did you notice the dark spot being red when you cut it? If you didn't notice splash a little water on that darker center and if it turns the dark spot red it's box elder for sure.
If it was pinkish I’d say box elder and I noticed the hackberry warts. It looks like it’s thoroughly pre seasoned wood.
My first guess was a maple family tree. Sure does look box-elderish. I've never seen that red go brown with age though.
If it is indeed hackberry, my experience, for what it is worth, is green or fairly fresh cut it is very stringy and hard to split. Almost like elm. But allowed some time to dry in the rounds it’s not terrible. There’s a pretty fine line though because it will go bad pretty rapidly if left unsplit for very long. Very heavy when wet
Id say maple, probably the red variety based on the heartwood color and spalting pattern typical of the species plus when i zoomed in on the bark. Red maple loves water and grows where the water table is high. Red maple, final answer. Any pics of the splits booneatl?
Yup 99% sure maple by the looks of the split. Split nice and clean once you got the wedge in. I see the purplish stain from it. Keep one end damp and that end will split much easier IME hand splitting. Once they start to check it gets harder.
