About a month ago or so I found a guy on market place selling ibc totes for $30 each delivered so I decided to pull the trigger on 20 of them. They had once contained black mulch dye. My initial plan was to make those nice little A frame roofs with the plastic bladder but I think I’ve changed my mind on that. This morning, I finally got to working on them and in 2 hours had the bladders removed from 16 of them. Once I removed the two bars holding the bladder down from top I was able to flip them over then use the tractor to lift the cage as the bladder slipped out. It went much easier than I had planned.
I believe I will use the metal cages for short wood or specialty wood I don’t often get much of such as black locust and hickory. The new plan is to just keep these out in the open like all of my other wood. As for the bladders, I plan on cutting the top off and setting each one on a pallet. I will then use them for junk wood for my boiler. All of that wood gets stored u set a roof with tractor access. This will double the amount of portable wood storage and cut my handling time in half.

Smart move Joe. If i had room and tractor its kind of a no brainer. A wise wood seller told me once that time is money. ;)

Keep in mind that each bladder will make 2 roofs...so depending on how many you need for your cull wood, you could still do both.
If you are going to use the cages for "specialty wood" you'll want it as dry as possible since you will probably be charging a premium for it...

True. I can always rethink it later. I do sell everything in the fall though and I am a big fan of the sun on the wood especially in the summer. Time will tell how I go about it I reckon.

    Funny thing about these totes….
Hoarders that want them can’t find them at an affordable price.
Hoarders that don’t have a place for them have to pass them up at the scrap yard.
Hoarders that can use a few, but are kinda indifferent about them, know where there’s dozens and dozens of them that can be had for free. (I fall into this last group)

My IBC bladders also had black mulch dye in them. Even after washing them with a pressure washer and stiff brush they still have residue in them. Made a real mess washing them out. Just an FYI

Thank you. I’ve been wondering about that. I think that solidifies the fact the bladders will be used to hold the junk wood for my owb

I fall into #2 on this.
I don't need a ton of them but a few would be good for me.

Can't find them at low cost , just have to keep looking.

Look into bags next time. The initial cost is a bit of a hit, but they are 1/3 the price of a tote and hold a face cord. You do need lift capacity to move them loaded, however.

Being able to have a conveyor dump directly into a bag has eliminated so much handling. For customers that have the ability, I can load the bag directly into their vehicle. And I haven't lost a bag yet.

I would have taken every last one of those... I only have about 20. I'd like 50. I don't think that makes me greedy.
