I keep the pouch right where I'm cutting. I don't fell trees. I buck downed trees so I am rarely moving around. I keep my water, my pouch, hookaroon, bar cover etc. all right there where I'm cutting.
Thanks Cash and LOTF! I now have a Bleeding Control Kit and an Israeli Bandage ordered and coming. I have been thinking about getting something coming for a while, but kept putting it off, because I didn't know what to all put in the "kit". I thought the $$$ were a little high at first, but I figure I can always crunch the numbers (while alive) laying in a hospital bed if I ever need to use it. Pretty sure it's worth it...if not for me then for someone else's use should I come upon someone who needs it.
And everyone please, buy a genuine TQ, there's some fakes out there that can fail when needed most buying directly from NAR (North American rescue) is a good way to go! Sent from my SM-G950U using Tapatalk
So true. I didn’t know about those kids. Glad someone was thinking straight when that happened. I think it’s okay to “step up on the stump” for stuff like this. Ya just never know what’s gonna happen. Nothing surprises me these days. I feel like this is the weirdest the world has been since I’ve been alive. I try to always be prepared.
I have a few of them. I got them from a neighbor, who is a rep for a medical supply company. You can get them from various online medical and trauma supply companies though. The CAT brand ones are pretty expensive, but you can count on them.
This is an excellent post, and a need for this is something that is always going to happen to someone else, and we need to be ready when it happens to them. When in fact, it could be our own life it saves, or a loved one. I need to be putting effort into this. Along the lines of safety, there are a couple things I do before I head out to cut wood. I always let my wife know where I'm going. And I try to ALWAYS have my phone on me, and readily accessible. Thank you Cash Larue!
I was also taught to have clotting powder/coagulant on hand. I’m not sure if that was mentioned above. I forget the entire story but the EMT that taught at the wilderness first aid class said that there were problems with allergic reactions to it (latex as I recall). However not bleeding to death trumped an allergic reaction.
Yep! I carry that stuff too. We call it quick clot or clotting gauze. It’s good stuff. It works really well. You pack wounds with it. I’ve use it to treat gunshot wounds. Good to have on hand.
Here's what I got, maybe a bit expensive but if it never gets used I'll be happy and if it does then I'll be glad I have it. I went with the SOFTT-W because it's supposed to be easier wrapping around an appendage (like a leg) then the CAT TQs, nothing against them. This is from Chinook Medical Gear, Inc. Thanks! Anyone have idea on what to store it all in? I can't find a tear open type pouch I like. Sent from my SM-G950U using Tapatalk
What if you're by yourself, and you don't have use of your phone. I would think you'd need to keep movement to a minimum, but obviously you need to get out of there asap. Is there a chance of going into shock, or passing out while trying to drive yourself out? Like everything else, I'm sure there's a lot of variables, not the least of which is the severity of the wound. Panic is always a concern.
The sooner you stop the bleeding, the less likely you are to go into shock. You could certainly pass out while driving. But if it’s either lay there and die, or risk passing out - I’ll run the risk of passing out I guess.
I have a couple CAT tourniquets in my range bag IFAK. Been meaning to put one with my chainsaw tools for ages — now I will! For anyone buying, be aware that there are a lot of fakes on Amazon. North American Rescue is a good source.
Great advice! Also, are you familiar with this? The Prometheus Story - Great Basin National Park (U.S. National Park Service) Pretty amazing and sad at the same time.
