I've had a couple pieces of wood lately that set off quite the sparkler display. I don't know if it's pockets of air, moisture, or whatever, but this wood was long dead and stacked for a year. It seems like the worst are the twisty ugly types, where a branch grew. I'm sure most here have seen them, they fly in all directions, sometimes splitting. Even with the door cracked just enough to get the poker through, the sparks still seem to find the opening, it's like they're seeking the air source.

This first part of this video is slow motion, the last part shows the intensity of it in real time. With the sound on, you can here them popping. When you get them this bad, you have to let it burn down before tending to the fire again.

I'll have pieces of locust that do that after a long slow burn when you open the door, poke it into coals and the air hits it....

That slo-mo part of your video is really cool!

I've had that same shower happen too, I don't recall what type of wood it was or if it was dry etc.
Like you said though have to burn down before opening the door!

    This is red oak.

I did the video on my iPhone, when I open the camera, it's one of the options at the bottom. Then it can be edited on where to start or end.

That's cool...looks like fire flies in slo-mo. A bad firestorm in real speed. Been there, done that, not fun.

I wish I had some of this firewood. I'd love to sit in front of my stove with a cold beer watching this show.

I have to be careful with mulberry. It’ll shoot sparks out the stove and at me if the door is open far enough. I usually open the ash pan door for a bit to make sure it’s finished with its show before proceeding. I’ve never had red oak so that.

One thing interesting about this, there's a crack in the upper left area of the log where you can see a lot of the sparks spewing out of. Almost like a volcano throwing out lava. If you put the video on full screen you might be able to see it better.

Yep the slo mo was cool. I get a lot that from some of the pine I burn or sometimes cedar and seems like when I just open the door one will fire off.

Slo-mo portion is sorta like the inside of a particle collider.

I haven't checked the moisture content of this wood, but I'm sure it's on the low side. Most of the wood I'm burning this year is, next year will be too. But very few have put on this sparkler display.
