I hit the jackpot today. First cut was spot on. Most people would probably try another place to cut, but not me. That was the 18” mark and dam it I’m sticking with it. I thought I was fighting metal. First I uncovered a sweet pavement filled cavity. Than I found the rare nail reinforced pavement. You gotta make sure the cavity filler doesn’t fall out. and there’s more I had to sharpen the saw 4x today to finish cutting the combo and I’m going to have to file the 661 again tomorrow. That rs chain has been the best metal finder I’ve ever owned. At least the .63 gauge chain was expensive.

Interesting. Not good for the equipment. I have seen some trees with cement in the holes but never asphalt. You never know what's inside.
Here’s my theory on it. This tree was next to a parking lot. The tree was there before the parking lot. When they paved the lot they gouged the tree with equipment. They didn’t want to get in trouble, or got in trouble, so they packed the wounds with asphalt and nailed it, so it wouldn’t fall off. This was a 40” dbh red oak.
After hitting metal or the log showing metal I just cut a big section and leave it rather than ruining chains.
If I had a machine to pick it up, I may have dropped it in a hole. The chain is not a total loss, but it’s lifespan was shortened for sure. The splits sold, or heat made from that chunk will pay for a replacement chain too.
That $&#%$ more than anything thats ever $@#%ed before. Ive seen cement/concrete filled voids but thats a first for me. I remember a small hickory at my dads that had a void filled in with concrete.
Concrete, fence, old tools, bicycle, check. Ashpalt is a new one on me. At least it's not Cottonwood or Pine.
