I had a loop of .375 chain custom sized for my Carlton 22" bar...76 drive links. The chain was used twice and the bar is now out of service. Will an OPE dealer break and shorten the chain to fit a 20" bar...72 drive links? How much you think they'll charge? Its useless to me as is.
Brought the chain to the local OPE guy. $5 to shorten. Good timing as one of my 20" chains is at the end of its life.
Another dumb chain question. I have three 36" chains full comp I'll never use. Bought cheap years back in a bulk lot. I have a 36" bar, but run full skip chain and don't use it that often so that chain should last many years. Had these for sale and no takers. Will an OPE dealer break them and make 72 DL loops to fit 20" bars? 114DL x 3 = 342/72=4.75. One chain is semi skip square grind. Would it be bad idea to use a segment of that in a loop? As long as there is an equal number of left and right facing cutters? Appreciate any input.
I wouldn’t try and mix full comp and skip chain in smaller loops, it would load the saw differently and possibly feel inconsistent in the cut. They should definitely resize chain for you. Maybe not while you wait. Search spinner/breaker on mp. Couple years ago I found some older Oregon pieces that are very easy to use for relatively cheap. I have them both screwed to a 2x6 and when I want to use them, I clamp that to my workbench. Works great.
How about a trade at the dealer (dunno if you got em in boxes or loose or what, so long as they can resell as new)? Seems easier for all. Ask if they'll trade you 3 to 2?
They got any logger customers? Those guys won't care. Might be like me and be happy to get old chain stock.
