When we installed this stove, I was on the edge of my seat when the temps touched the red zone on my stove top thermometer. With experience, I've learned to settle down and not stress out so easily. I try not to let it get this high, about 750 degrees, but on rare occasions it does. By the time it reaches this temp, I've usually choked off the air. One thing I've learned, stoves have a lag time on the temps. I'm not sure how accurate this thermometer is, but at least it's a bench mark. The stove seems to handle it well, it's not glowing or popping too much.

I'm wondering if I'm getting too comfortable with this high of a temperature?

Do you have a inferred heat gun? I’d check your stt with something else to check your temp gauge

That's answering my question. :yes:That's where the infrared will help.

Good question. I'm not sure, it's been a while since it's been room temp. I'll have to remember to check that out. :salute:

Do you have a flue probe thermometer also ?

I called SBI to inquire about stovetop temps & flue temps for my stove, the tech I talked to said sustained 800* stovetop was not an issue. I usually run mine about 650* but it hits 750* occasionally but it usually settles back in about 600*-650*

The infrared thermometer is a good plan, my magnetic thermometers are off a bit. One is 50* off, the other is 75* off.

Same here...my SBI stove couldn't care less about 800* STT...

I do have a flue guard, it was right at 800* at the same time.

Sounds like our stove temps cruise in the 600-650 zone. On the occasions mine hits 750*, I really don't feel like it's out of control, but I do encourage it down.

When wondering how hot, also realize it matters; steel, cast or stone.

I've only had this stove, and didn't know it matters on type of material. How does my steel stove play into this, and the others as well?

That's good to know. I'm not pushing for that high of a temp, but at least it makes me feel better about it when it does. No need to change my habits on this one. :salute:

700 is my number, but I typically always keep it below 5. If I burn that hot, my living space temps would be 78 and above down to about single digits outside.

Yes, steel, then cast then soapstone but most say cast and soapstone are about the same. I think they are.

We like it toasty, mid 80's is comfortable. Fortunately my wife and I agree on that. If I see her pull the throw blanket over, I know the fire needs more fuel..

I typed this a few times and deleted it not wording what I wanted to say the right way- but here it goes anyhow-

The metal thermometer I have on the top of my stove, like stihl kicking has disagrees by as much as 150F with my IR gun thermometer.

Example- my stove top this morning with the metal thermometer was reading about 700F and the IR was telling mid 550s/ low 560s depending where I was pointing on the stove top.

Felt like a little bit of data overload but your real temp might not actually be north of 700.
