Rare beautiful Winter day in PNW. Shirt sleeve temps. Hauling up some wood with the quad and trailer.

Just cut , split and stacked some of the best alder i've EVER CUT this week!! Going up to hopefully get a bunch more of it!! Love the color when it starts to dry. My brother when he worked in the woods as a faller would come home with his hands almost yellow/brownish in color. Really enjoy the fist splits, then just slabbing it, oh boy it is good wood!!

Nice size alder. Looks pretty clean to split as well.

Western red alder Here are some links. In our area, it is considered a weed tree. It grows quite fast and I guess it is the closest we get to a hardwood tree. It dries quite quickly and in an open fireplace, it is quite pretty to watch.

    Red alder

    Red Alder, Alnus rubra

I know nothing of burning Alder. We have very few of them in the forest here. What I do know is my kitchen cabinets are made of them and I like the way they look.

I really like alder. Straight, clean, splits easy, and dries fast enough.
The only downside is the amount of ash it leaves, but it costs me about an extra minute a week to clean out.

I spread the ash on the lawn so it’s no bother here either.
