I would have to agree with that. I was out cutting up a bunch of Siberian elm today. When it is green it is dark in the center like the pictures.
Chinese elm is pretty uncommon. At least up here in the Mitten state. It does escape sometimes from urban area planting just like Siberian elm, but it wasn’t used to replace our native Elm nearly as much when DED happened.
Whatever it is I’m happy to have it as my local scrounge areas have been turning up empty. 90% of the time though I do all my cutting where I scrounge so the mess and noise stays there, only having to split rounds at my house. Hope I don’t pizz off too many neighbors with the 395 as she’s not exactly quiet. Got a few hours to work on it tomorrow and maybe Sunday evening but that’s not even gonna put a dent in it. Not going to have a full day to work it till’ early March.
I have other saws/bars I’ll be using. That was just to get through and noodle one quite large piece that was in there. Been going at it with the 562 and 20” bar.
I really haven’t used this saw too much, was a “too good to pass up” deal I got a while back. But I am liking it a lot. Also wanna get my 346 with 16” out on this job for some of the smaller ones, love that saw too.
Did 2 face cord today, I’m beat. Definitely out of woodin’ shape since my injury. Gonna get a few more logs bucked up and clean up the area a bit. This pile is kind of overwhelming TBH, doesn’t even look like I made a dent. Little at a time I guess. Ideally I’d like it done within 4 weeks. It’s for sure elm, got that distinct smell we all know! Also seems to dull chain quickly. Not sure if that’s just the wood/bark or I noticed some mud packed in bark from scooping with loader.
Got a little time to work on the pile after work today. Cur some logs into rounds and piled to split. Wanted to get a good pile so I can work on some in the evenings after work, figure the log splitter running 1/2 throttle is a lot quieter than the saw. By the time I’m out of rounds should be weekend during the day so I’ll cut more rounds. Rinse and repeat. Rounds ready to go what still needs to be cut
There’s one big piece in the middle I’d like to mill some slabs from. Not sure I can work around it enough to get the other logs out from under and get it into position I need for milling. It’s a big SOB that I ain’t moving without equipment.
Still going with this mess! I work better with a deadline I guess. Have a tree service coming to trim 3 trees on Friday and this has gotta be outta the way so they can get the lift through the gate. The owner said he would move the two bigguns into the back for me with the MT100 as I wanted to mill them instead of make firewood. I don’t know how much one of those can lift but these are some pretty huge logs. Going to have a couple big locust limbs left behind to make firewood out of too! I hope I can finish up getting everything cut and moved tomorrow. At least it’s out of the way then and I can split when I get more time.
