My sister sent out a message in our family group chat yesterday showing us her latest oil delivery. #2 fuel oil at $4.31 a gallon totaling $902.51! Makes me even more glad I heat with wood. Her house isn't that big and she doesn't keep the heat very high. Hoard ON!
Yikes! That's quite a pill to swallow. I'm so glad we don't have to budget for that. Couple of those in a season completely justifies buying into wood heat.
Kind of ironic considering her brother is a firewood baron... Our whole family heats with wood, except for my one sister...they kinda wanted to when they bought their house, but the stove was old, the chimney needed work, and the insurance company said they would charge $50 extra per year to use the stove...they tore it out. Their NG bill is not horrendous though either...
Check out my friends propane bill from last year. Yikes. The tank went completely empty and the gauge doesn't work. I told her to switch companies.
Jeepers. Before we had our stove, our natural gas bill peaked at <$200 for January, and was maybe $600 for the winter in Minnesota. How long does a thousand bucks of propane or fuel oil last in Ohio or New Jersey? Is that multiple winters worth?
That's about right for mid-Atlantic. Wish there was better access to natural gas around here. FWIW, we are running just oil heat this winter as we are in the middle of moving our stove after renovations...
When I bought my house I went 400 gallons (500 gallons tank 80% full) of propane in 30 days real easy to justify new furnace; switching to oil; adding stove chimney over time
Wow, this is a rare moment when we need a "dislike" button. But it does make me feel good about whatever money I spend cutting wood!
The last time we ran our LP fired gas pack was back in December of 2004. We were using just under 400 gallons a month. In todays prices that would be around $1300 per month. We ran a Central Boiler (OWB) up until this past Sunday when I installed a new Heatmaster. I couldn't imagine buying gas again.
The year before we got our stove, we used something like 500 gallons of heating oil at $4+ / gallon. Don't miss those days at all. My wife sometimes gripes a bit about the mess, but she always comes back to reality when reminded of $4/gallon.
There was a propane explosion above Albany New York in that month …. propane was 4 dollars a gallon 91k btu propane 138k btu oil. Oil under $3 a gallon real easy to switch a burner on a boiler
