So, heard a couple of chainsaws going today and upon further investigation, I found a couple of guys that work for the town taking down a big tree by the roadside. The said to take whatever I wanted and they'd be back to pick up the rest around 9:00 tomorrow. So, I grabbed a few pieces and I hope to get more tomorrow morning. They said they think it's locust, but I just wanted to confirm w you guys... CD3A6131-E933-400D-8AFC-E356E34B7514.jpeg 2528184E-37C3-4D99-9EB1-0D45DFCEE006.jpeg

Large growth rings and a cross section of the bark looking like layered cookies says elm to me as well.

Elm x6. Not bad wood unless you hand split it. Some splits nice but other can be a nightmare. I would not hesitate to grab a load if it was close.

I'd say its either Red elm or American elm.

Bark says no to me , far from an expert but the bark just doesn't have that prehistoric look.
Any BL around here just looks like it could be skin off a dinosaur

Hate to be the bearer of bad news but its not locust. Locust has that yellowish heartwood. Rather unmistakable. Either elm or possibly ash???
EDIT: i zoomed in on the pics and i say elm. Let it sit until the bark comes off then maybe itll split easier from what ive been told.

Ok, so elm it seems to be. I'll let the tree crew know. Thanks for all the input. You guys never disappoint.

They said, "Where do you live? We'll drop it off ". I only live about a mile and a half away, so it worked out well. AD740124-CA07-4D35-AD1F-29D8790BF0A0.jpeg After cutting and stacking:

So, I look out my window and what do I see? The town dump truck was bringing me another load of wood. I'm running out of storage space, but I couldn't say no, after they delivered it. Good guys.
... I may have to go get some pallets now. 2442CC2D-C299-4316-B2BD-1FFEDB181438.jpeg
