Most of January was pretty cold around here and the first few days of February have been as well. The wood boiler has been pretty hungry recently. Here is a small truckload of boiler wood I moved from my moms to my house today. Also, a picture of snow on top of the boiler taken about 36 hours after the snow had ended. I’d say it’s insulated pretty well.
Indeed. This past week has consumed some wood. Partly because my snow storm turned into a four day weekend; keeping the house up to 74. I normally turn the thermostat down into the sixties while at work, since it is no expense to warm the house when we get home. Saturday, I had a couple close calls of having to start a new fire, not estimating the overnight and daytime burns in the boiler.
I’ve really been trying to get on the 3 year plan but it’s murder. I have successfully made to the 2 year plan however.
I’m watching JCMC posts with his new gasification outdoor boiler. That maybe a strong consideration with the current ax incentive.
Two farm houses & a hot water blower heater in a small building plus the domestic water for the 3 buildings mentioned above.
I do not think I could scrounge enough wood around here to keep that going. I would be wiped out in about 3 months.
Oh how I remember those years in the barns and milkhouse... Twas ok accept when it turned really cold.
On average from October- End of April we average approximately 25 cords of wood. The stove sits between the 2 farm houses 185’ from each house to the stove. Stove is a Central Boiler 6048 installed with 1” thermopex pipe, install was done in 2006. It does a fine job of keeping everything warm & toasty as long as you keep it fed. I’ve been looking at a Crown Royal 7400 & a Heatmaster G10,000. Not sure which one would serve our needs best & last the longest. As I get older although I love cutting wood it is becoming more of a chore & less of an enjoyable hobby.
I've been in the same boat, 1 year to the next This fall i bought 9 cords of tree length ash to get a Jumpstart, cut and hauled about 5 cords of poplar Its definitely not easy!!
