Nearing the center of the Mackinaw Bridge. That is a big ship although it looks small in the photo.

And here we have what is left of a fox!

They claim this is all the same animal but I question it because of the tree limbs in the photos below.

Wonder if the second picture was after it fell or was knocked down? I’d guess an eagle picked up a roadkill fox?
I’ve seen a few crazy things stuck on the line. Even picked a few down during my time with the line crews. Raccoons, house cats, squirrels, an iguana, fish, birds big and small including owls, hawks and a great blue heron.
Or the times when wire falls down in the woods and no one knows for a period of time. I remember one time a few years ago we had a call for a fire in the woods and flickering lights. The line had come down and been hanging hot about two feet off the ground. Ended up with two deer, a fox, a hawk two vultures and an opossum! My guess was the deer walked into and the rest came for a snack and got it too.

Really hope to experience the UP someday. But not in those temps!

That also is my guess on how it happened.

Here are a couple more pictures for your enjoyment Jason. The first one is from the 1938 blizzard.

We own ground in the UP as well as the lower plus the farm down here. Both the upper and lower-upper ground is for summertime camping. Bought the upper ground back when we snowmachined. Don't do that anymore. Too old to deal with them. Strictly warm weather camping now.

    Ya D UP Huh,
Built our cabin 20 miles NW of Manistique on Thunder Lake back in the 70s. The weather up there is unpredictable. One year driving west on US2 {before they put in all the limestone break wall} the waves from Lake Michigan were crashing over the highway and freezing. It was nerve wracking driving. On another year the snow was so deep that we shoveled down to the kitchen window, and slid in over the sink while my brother was digging out the front door. On another trip there was green grass showing on New Years day! And as far as dead critters go, you never know what you will find when the winter finally ends and the snow melts. Still love the UP..

I worked those Lake ships for 15 yrs. The latest I ever sailed into winter was Feb 2nd and the only way we could move they last three weeks was with a ice breaker escort. Wonder who is still running now

So do we. Having said that, we don't like the drive up or back on 23 and 75 and I'm not fond of crossing the bridge either. Wife especially don't like the low guardrails or the height. Why we don't go up very often and use our lower-upper ground for camping and hunting a lot more.

I wasn't sure what area you were talking about so I went to Google Earth. It looks to be all state forest area up there. The USA/Canada border does wind around a bit through Sault St. Marie.

Both state and national forest for the UP. Then there are huge chunks of forest owned by paper mills and some electric companies.

From 40,000 ft up, here is a picture of the straits and the bridge. It's too bad no ships were in the picture but you can see Mackinaw City and St Ignace.

Did you know that my grandfather worked in this mineshaft in Iron River/Stambaugh, MI?

All I can say is, 40K feet or on the deck itself, going across always gives me the heebie-geebies. Done it on a motorcycle too, on the grated part where you can look right down at the water.

I crossed it one time in my big truck and my wife went in the sleeper and stayed there until we reached the other side. Had a load of rolled roofing on the wagon I delivered to the prison at Kinross. That was an interesting adventure in itself.

So did I but in layup or in the repair dock. I still had to be a member of the longshoreman's union however. I even worked on the Fitz.... and she was a chronic leaker.

I not so fondly remember one year sledding in the Upe and it was 45 (f) actual and I got frostbit real bad on my cheeks and fingers. To this day, my hands have never fully recovered either.

Wife and Kids went up yesterday, I will head up after work on Thursday. My parents have had a place in Cedarville since '85, heading up for the annual Snowsfest, low key small town good time.

I worked on several rust buckets myself. Four of the seven ships I worked on up there are scrapped. All 4 were built for WWII or older.
