The City of Prescott had been planning on opening lower Goldwater Lake to the public for the last few years. Covid put a stop to it when revenue ran low but last month, we finally received funding to start the project. A new road, parking, two ramadas and bathrooms set the stage for many trees to be marked for removal. What were they going to do with the wood? Most of it was to be dumped unless there were any takers. I had a couple days off and when I got the go ahead from my supervisor and the project coordinator contracted, I moved fast to get whatever I could before they began work. Arizona white oak, Emory oak and alligator juniper. I thought I'd show the hollowed-out oak that I dropped, sure wouldn't have wanted to climb that one, lol.
Good score! Too bad that oak was so hollow, probably a good thing it didn't barber chair on you. Will you be able to scrounge the trees that are dumped?
Anything they push over with the D9 will be so full of dirt that I wouldn't want to put a chain to it. As far as the oak, I knew what I was getting into with the first flat cut for the notch. When it's hollow you can feel it.
Unfortunately, I didn't get that much. After it's c/s/s I'll only have about three cords. I'm heading back up tomorrow to see if there's anything left for the taking that hasn't been pulled through the dirt. Fingers crossed.
I didn't mean to say I didn't get lucky being able to take what I did, far from it. When I got to look at the area of construction on a map, I thought that quite a few more trees would be coming down. There were a lot more trees that had ribbons on them but were worked around in the final diagram. I'll have to sit on the majority of it for at least 3 years as well, Arizona white oak doesn't burn worth anything until 3 years c/s/s and a few more years make it better to burn IMO.
