Got all geared up for an afternoon cutting in the woods. My target was a big blowdown hickory on a friend’s farm. I cleaned up my trusty 2166. Greased the roller tip after putting a lock n lube and needle fitting on my grease gun. Blew out the oil channels. Flipped the bar. Put on a freshly sharpened chain. Set up my brand new 550xpg MkII. It arrived a couple days ago. Super stoked! Cleaned up a Carlton 16” bar for it. Greased the roller, cleaned the channels, wiped it down and checked for any burs or other issues. Threw on a new chain. Made sure all my tools and PPE were in the milk crate I carry gear in. Grabbed my gas can. One of those Husqvarna combo tanks with gas on one side and bar oil on the other. Gas was around 3 liter mark. Bar oil looked like about 1 liter. Loaded up the dog and and my gear and drove out to the farm. Made my way into the timber and started getting set up. Took a glamour shot of the new saw. And then I went to fill it…. Oops! No bar oil. I guess I saw a shadow in the fill window? I don’t know. The can was heavy enough from the gas that I was fooled. Oh well, I guess I’m not cutting with the new 550 today, but I can just use my 2166. It’s probably got most of a tank still in it. Nope. Pretty much empty. Well there goes cutting. Not enough time to drive back into town, buy oil, drive back out, and get anything done before I have to be back… Live and learn. Not a complete bust though. Took the dog on a hike through woods for a while before heading home. Worth the trip just for that.
Didn’t have tools to remove the plug on the oil pan of the truck to take it down to the fill mark on the dipstick? Could’ve gotten a few cuts outta that.
I hate those days. Remember everything except for the most obvious! Sent from my SM-G950U using Tapatalk
I’ve got a quart of 10w30 in the truck… I was tempted to use that! Couldn’t bring myself to put it in a brand new saw though… or spray it all over woods that aren’t mine.
I did the same the other day. Forgot my toolbox with the small bottles of mix and oil. (cutting session is rarely two tanks of gas) Luckily had enough in the tank for what i cut. Maybe old age is catching up with you Prometheus
Probably tomorrow. Weather will be just how like it for cutting - mid to high 20s. I was planning to work on my Landcruiser tomorrow but that can wait.
Couple years ago, i went to the gate n the other side of the woods, all ready to slay a cut off pile. No scwrench. Some young neighbor was cruising in a utv with his girlfriend. Had one in the bed, that put me back in business. those little things really can bug you when your mind is in cutting mode.
Wait !! i was going to comment on the original post but I forgot what is was about by the time I scrolled down !! it would have been ok to use the 10/30 being winter and you had greased your tip some of the winter bar oils are multi vis JB
That sucked, all excited to use the new toy! I've forgotten a few things here and there, but fortunately nothing to put a halt on the day. I now have a list on my phone, that I "try to remember" to check when getting ready. At Four Oh, you're still a pup.
I don't put much in the truck bed, but having everything with me has is merrits. The tool box keeps saws and fuel, tools etc., on hand always. That has served me well, as I happen by places where cutting needs to get done regularly (work, various storms) and a few minutes of hitting a score on the way to work. But, it is also a strength to be able to switch gears as circumstances dictate....to not miss something we otherwise would not have experienced or seen. Sca
I got a call from a guy who needed some oak rounds cut to shorter lengths to fit his stove. He said his saw isn’t big enough. It sounded easy and I was thinking in and out in under an hour. I packed 3 saws, 2 partial jugs of bar oil, gas can, another can with mix since the job would be near the station with 93 efree, cant hook, log rite, wedges, hatchet, short pickaroon. The last 3 stay in the truck. The young me would have thrown one topped off saw in the truck and gone. I get there and the tree service had piled up the 20-24” oak rounds in the brush and ivy along the back fence line. Some sections not cut through all the way. I’m sick with Covid and thinking chit this is not going to be an easy buck and go job. Good thing I had the cant and log rite, because I had to move every got dang piece out of the pile and brush to cut. Only needed the 462 with one tank of gas, but I’m glad I had the cant and pick, so I didn’t have to go back home, or reschedule, or die wrestling rounds. I’ve lost time and $ because I wasn’t prepared for the unknown and unexpected. In my mind I was thinking straight line of rounds in the flat lawn no sweat. I still forget water Never used one of those 2 in 1 Husqvarna cans, but they look pretty slick with the auto cut off spouts. Sorry you didn’t get to run the new saw.
Maybe you've found one negative to those combi-cans. I put my bar oil in an old laundry detergent bottle that is see through so I always know if it has enough for the trip.
Thats so irritating to forget or overlook things like that. Its good you made the most of the situation and got a good walk in. Where are you located in Iowa? Im between Cedar Rapids and Marshalltown.
