20/69 fresh snow and those danged winds that I thought were dying down last night were just playing with me. they must have paused to take a deep breath and just got stronger throughout the night! I'm glad the temperature out there is so mild.
5/69 here loaded up the stove with some split hickory and oak rolling nicely. A high of 20 here today looking forward to working on some more logs out back. It's starting to look like a wood hoarders paradise.
It was 12 went I went to bed and 22 when I woke up. Breezy and snow flurries. Boiler has what's left of last night's cherry and hickory and I topped it off with some ash. Should be good for another 24-36 hours.
Zero outside this morning. 58 upstairs and 60 downstairs. Stove was ripping with my usual supply of mystery wood by the time I was out the door for work an hour later.
It was 4 at the house this morning, and warming up nicely now. Currently 21 with a high of 27 projected. Spruce is the weapon of choice today, keeping the rising bed of coals in check.
It has really warmed up. I made a trip about 70 miles west and came home early. Snow changed to some freezing drizzle. Yuck. About 20 moles from home it changed over to snow again. Now that I am home, it all stopped.
To be honest I haven't been as wowed as I'd hoped I'd be. The Red Oak I'm used to seems to catch a lot easier and throws similar amounts of heat. I will say the Locust leaves coals longer. The Locust is 18 months or so seasoned and the Red Oak around 2-2.5 years. I ain't giving up on BL yet though. I'm just so used to that sweet, sweet Red Oak.
The way BL is talked about I was half expecting it to open the stove door and load itself in thanking me for the opportunity.
Give it a shot. I know red oak is king for a lot of people and I’ve burned some in the past that I still tear up over. However, once you get into a good batch of locust it can be just as good, with less drying time. It just takes a little getting used to.
Three moles woke up one morning and could tell the homeowner was cooking breakfast. They all decided to head out and see what was on the menu. Traveling along in typical mole fashion, that is head to butt of the leader, head to butt for all the followers. The first mole says to the other two "I smell bacon!" Then, the second mole says "I smell pancakes" Then..... the third mole says "All I can smell is molasses"
I saw that mistake after I hit post. Was going to edit it right away then thought it might be fun to see who would catch it and what comments there might be. I was not disappointed.
