Got off work a bit early and got a little done on the big oak. Got 4 rounds off the trunk and noodled in half and some of the other branches removed too. Gonna stay home with our 5 Covid kids 3A540AC8-53F4-4535-AA3E-9E1857CC4CD8.jpeg B6A452C9-065F-4D60-9309-1B789305C1B9.jpeg CF5D25A6-429F-4010-B085-A0099FCE1A5F.jpeg FD9E463B-39FA-4B98-AE6D-4DBF0BA3EF9A.jpeg tomorrow and will hopefully finish getting it all in rounds at least. Found some fence in the very middle of the trunk pieces, bet they have a story to tell. No telling how old that was. Here are some photos.

    Blue stains from metal.

I hope you found the fence before your saw did,

    Nice looking wood!

    Nice score!
The kids home means you stick around and take care of, or sstay home and cut wood and check in now and again?

I didn’t, it is turning in to an expensive tree. Had to buy a couple chains already. Should be past it now at 6 or so feet.

Yeah , they are all staying in their rooms so just feeding them pretty much. Supposed to turn cold tomorrow here but will still find some time to get some done if not all.

Yeah could have been worse for sure. Will put the file to the remaining chains in the morning.

Glad to hear they're still good, figured they were pooched. I haven't been fortunate enough to hit metal with the saw, hope to keep that going.

Hats off to you for your persistence! :tip: Yeah metal loves to play hide and seek in trees. Get those dulled ones sharp again. Nice to have a back up or five when cutting. I hit dirt three times yesterday and it takes the fun out of it for sure. I should have multiples of chains but with many saws and bar lengths it can get pricey. The fact that im CHEAP doesnt help either.

Keep up the good work and share your progress.

I am a tightwad too ! I bought two new chains today on the way home and will have to file them both today. Salvageable at least so that’s a silver lining. Hopefully I can finish up the cutting tomorrow and by the weekend be splitting while my kids haul brush ! Would rather go to the dentist than i would move brush ...

That's a big tree! Too bad about the metal. Hope the chains can be sharpened. Even halved those look heavy!
You don't want to spend too much time around those kids. You need to stay outside as much as possible so you don't get it. Just check on them once in a while. That's the responsible thing to do.

They are very heavy in half even. One rolled into a small ditch right next to that and was about all I wanted getting it out! Will be manageable with the log lift now tho.
The wife and I had the Rona late October early November and was around the last two to get it for a couple days , so far so good so thinking we are still ok with natural immunity. Doc said we would be good at least 3 months, not going to work during regular hours to be safe to others tho.

When we cut fencerow trees on the farm we used to leave the bottom 6-8' laying rather than hitting metal. But that is some dandy wood there.

Yeah , I think it will be worth it. As soon as this one is done I have an even bigger one to fell. I will get a tape on it tonight but I bet it would go 43-44 across stump- this was 39 ish.

Mykidsdadd & buZZsaw BRAD talking about chains and being cheap got me to thinking. Chains are a wear item, and eventually they will be used up/worn out. So why not have at least a couple for each saw/bar length? I seriously doubt that when they need replaced at some point in the future that the price will have gone down any.
Kinda like the old saying about it not costing any more to run on the top half of the gas tank vs the bottom half.
Stocking up on chains now will probably save you some money in 3 years

Cash flow, for some, could be a reason.
