A couple reasons for posting this: 1) as a blessing to BuZZsaw who found a gift that was as perfect for us as was it's uniqueness as a gift; a sizeable truckload of well seasoned Black Locust. 2) our first full season of burning (fall '21 & spring '22) and we're going through more wood than I was anticipating...and 1.3 cord had to be separated out around Thanksgiving as the tarp covering it had holes....some of it was wetter and needs all the time we can give it before use. The BL truckload might get us over the hump. 3) wondered if our experience burning it is same as yours: Dear Wife says the BL burns way longer than oak. I’ve just played stove-tetris, and the stove top thermometer is not climbing toward overfire. Not sure it will. If I'd stuffed it with oak, 20 minutes later I'd be closing the air down all the way as the stove temps headed to overfire. With BL & 30 minutes in and it's sitting at 450°. I'll damp it down as normal, and betting we'll have coals in the morning. Curious as to other's experience w/burning BL. And thanks Brad. SCA
BL is incredible firewood. You definitely don't get the flame show that other woods can give, but man does it ever put out the heat, and the lasting coal bed is unmatched.
Yup....an hour in and a beautiful pile of coals and very little flame. Im excited to see what it looks like in the morning. Sca
I'd bet you'll be just as excited about the temp inside in the morning. Burns as described above, matched only by Osage/Hedge imo.
I just loaded the woodstove full of BL for the night. Pieces were catching before I could finish loading. Love BL. Even the stinky smell. Which I only smell occasionally outside.
Hey! Sorry for the delay. My mom departed for Heaven late Friday night. Its been a bit of a situation here. More relief than grief, it was a long fight w/Dementia. A lot of grieving along the way. Since she and we know where she's headed, the pain of death has lost it's sting somehow. So we had enough coals after BL stove-tetris (is this term in our glossary here?) That there were coals 8 hours later is awesome. A straight oak loading wood have seen a neay cold stove in the morning. We ran stright BL loads for a day. I felt like straight loads struggled to get up beyond 450° full open. I added a few oak shorts N/S oriented, to a BL load, and it took right off to 600°F. I also think the Jotul F500 is a little undersized for our house. The coaling of the BL is unique too: where oak is chunks, BL seems more like strands of coal (Dear wife noticed this). The crackling, even in the wood stove, is neat too. That must be awesome in an open burn! I'm hooked. I haven't seen a Black Locust score yet, but one shows up I'll be on it like white on rice. Sca
So sorry for your loss Dave. My condolences for you and your family. I know what its like as my mother is 96 and been in a home for six years. Yes stove tetris is a term on here. Uh oh, sounds like you have locust mania. Have to find some for you in the area. I know Eric Wanderweg & jo191145 frequently browse for BL on CL & FBM and can send you a lead??? Eric got me into a great score of it last March.
Prayers for you on Mom going home. I can relate with the dementia. My Mom was the the same and while I still miss her I was ready to see her join Jesus.

Sorry for your loss Dave. The only Locust score I’m aware of is in Middletown. A cruise for you I believe. It’s also an old ad but I have a feeling no ones went after it. Still some good BL in there. FB marketplace.
Wow! Thanks for the thoughts and the prayers. That means a lot for sure. Interestingly, the loss itself was one thing, but the family dynamics is altogether another. It seems that stuff that has gone unadressed for years kinda shows up. Nothing big, but the added processing energy is already in short supply... jo191145 that BL score is a hike from here. Thats funny Joe. I spotted that a while back and it looked like locust to me. I PMed the guy Dec. 1 and he never responded. Messaged him again Dec. 26 and he responded. I asked for address and he says Middletown and didnt respond when i asked for street address. I did again a few days ago and got it....finally. 170 Liberty St. Dunno when and if im going there, as its nearly half hour one way. Id like to see it first if its worth the effort.
