I was pushed into retirement about 6yrs ago. After 17 yrs, I was laid off, over the phone. Lovely, eh?

I did contracting for a year and that was it.

It was a blessing as more and more of my time was spent assisting my elderly parents.

To answer your question - I ordered 3 cords of log length wood and got on the 3yr plan. I've managed to stay on it since.

Retirement - just what exactly is it? I've signed nothing stating it. I've not needed to start collecting SSI. Is retirement simply not being fully employed? I'm just out of work, but not needing to look.

I've got a ways to go but I will definitely wake before light and watch the sun come up on the momentous day. No idea what the rest of the time will include.

My retirement happened quite suddenly by my own decision. I spent more time with my husband and my mother and started catching up with my UFOs (unfinished objects) in my sewing room - some which were 30 years old. We took trips spur of the moment. 18 months later, I am back working but with flexible days and the ability to say no when I don't want to work. I don't want to work fulltime again.

Woke up early and have been since being retired.

I am always awake before the sun and most always up and around before the sun. Can't remember the last time I was in bed while the sun was rising.....

As far as what I did that first day of retirement, I think I may have visited with the VSO (a friend), stopped in and spoke with my financial officer about my IRA and investments, probably went to the cottage and did something constructive.

    Congrats Redneck

Will there be a celebration tonight?

First off, Congratulations! I retired at 59. Immediately started a campaign to do all the repairs/upgrades that the house and yard needed, from replacing one of the decks that was failing to new fascia and gutters. Also, new dishwasher and fencing. For 3 months I was way busier than at regular work. Then when I was all caught up I was bored to tears. Eventually things evened out and I got settled into more balanced routines. Just a general observation: The best thing about retirement is that you spend more time with the Wife! The worst thing about retirement is that you spend more time with the Wife.

OMG! It's like looking in the mirror. This is 100% me. The boredom is brutal and nothing has balanced out yet. I took the plunge this week and invested in Coyote killing equipment. This should keep me busy for a few weeks.:rootintootin:

Yeah, I suspect a lot of wives think they can finally spend a lot of time with the husband. Husband gets smothered and goes back to work.

Good. If you don't need it, start collecting it and investing it in index funds or mutual funds. You will turn that not needed money into more money then you would get if you collected it later.

I retired at age 57 to take care of my 86 year old mother who was in decline. I went through a mountain of paper work to get her established at my home moved what I could and had to sell the rest. She lived another 4 months with her last month in the hospital .I spent another month with a mountain of paper work to settle her trust and will. So here I am 6 years later and just now seem to be recovering from the most stressful event of my life. exercise and hard work helped me through some very rough spots along the way.

Now as for you , you'll have to invent a new life as the old work for the man days are behind you. good luck and wishing you the best.

    Congrats on retirement!

Me, I'm waiting for the company buyout for my 34 years of service. I know it's coming only a matter of time.

Once I do get to retirement, I won't be retired I'll just be doing more of what I want to do and when I want to do it. I'm only 56 so I have a little time before I get to being able to get on Medicaid which is my current dilemma. So I figure once I've gotten my alimony check from the company I'll find something to do for a few years that is waaayyyy less stressful, and does not require overnights. Then it'll be fiddling with small engine stuff, projects around the house, traveling, splitting wood, boiling maple sap for syrup, etc, etc etc. Like I said doing what I want to do when I want to do it.

    Congrats Redneck

Me, I got 5-7 more years of work and then I will fill up the car with a tank of gas and leave the state of NJ. Its less than a mile to NY so NJ will quickly be in my rear view mirror. Not sure where the destination will be but for sure I won’t be staying here.
