I moved wood to the deck this morning, and was left with this sadness. Those racks need to be moved about a foot. So, it'll be like that for a while. I need soft ground to get them somewhat level before refilling. I look at it as an opportunity for improvement. I did clean it up a bit. Surely, I am not alone with sights like this, this time of year. Let's see yours? Sadness likes company
Actually to me thats a good sight. Means i can hoard more wood or process some to fill it up. How much in rounds you have on hand Mike? Enough to fill em up? Ill get some pics later.
I've got a bunch of ash onsite, split and to be split. It would come close to filling them. Those racks are ~10ft. They, and others like them, were rescued from landfill, a few years ago. I'll be getting a bunch of fresh red oak from the blowover at my SIL's . The location of those racks, at the edge of the woodyard, would be better suited for the red oak to sleep for 3yrs. Then, I won't need to snowblow that area for a few years. Other racks will be emptied over the next few months. There'll be options for filling.
G Good idea on the oak. I had an oak rack open up at storage...two cords worth and have the rounds/splits to fill it, hence the priority of getting that white oak cut up. Great repurpose on those. I love repurposing. Thank my mom for that!
I'm with Brad here, empty racks = opportunity/justification to hoard more It also means all of my past hoarding was worth the effort. I look forward to replenishing the empty racks by the house, and then replacing/consolidating the matrix of piles out in the backyard.
Not as noticeable in the shed, compared to looking at your stacks, but considering it was full a month and a half ago, I notice the difference. Burning less than usual, despite the bitter cold, due to being into about a cord of great beech.
Normally it isn't an issue however there was some serious wind with that storm yesterday. Luckily the snow is just loose on top and is easily knocked off.
MikeInMa that to me is satisfying as I recall how comfortable I've been able to keep our home and it also opens up space so I can continue putting up good firewood.
I have been dismantling my wood storage set up and have moved about 8 cords up to the new house. As I burn at the old house and move to the new house it's all coming down except 2 cord that the new owner asked me to leave for her. It's kinda of weird breaking everything down and dismantling it all. It's been there in many shapes and configurations for 40 years. But I get to start all over in a new place. I'm glad I'm still young, if you call 63 young.
As others have said, this isn't sad for me. I love watching the stacks shrink so I have a reason to start building again. Pics of the beginning of season vs. now in my basement. Luckily I still have all this to make disappear...
I agree. I've burned ~1.3 cords so far. Inside us toasty. NH mountain man - hey, youngster. You're 2yrs my junior. Best of luck with finalizing your move. Is there an end date to when you'll be done moving stuff out?
Just outside Westfield Mike. Yes, I'm OCD about keeping things clean. I swear that lots of folks with wood furnaces in their basement do not own a broom. I sweep up at least once a day and installed an extra drop in the center of my cellar for my central vac which I do about once a week.
Well, we hope to sell by March, and moving the rest of the wood will depend on how much snow we have. I'm selling to a friend and she doesn't care when and how I haul the rest of my wood out, so that is good. we go to the new house house every week for 3 or 4 days and just keep hauling up a full load every trip. The wood is really all that is left to move.
Some half cord racks in my area at the landlords down below. I have a bunch of older wood there i may move up front to fill. He has told me i could put new stacks in a different area, but his son says no so i havent brought any new wood here since 2020.
My friends 2/3 empty wood shed. Im filling the far bay with barkless black locust. Pic from yesterday. He wants oak heartwood splits in the middle.
