The weather today here in coastal NC is rather windy but the temp is great for cutting wood. It's 43 degrees but the wind is blowing at 22mp with higher gusts. At what point do you say it's to windy to be out dropping trees? I'm cutting in an area where I don't have to worry about hitting anything but other trees. What other considerations to do you take into account?
Depends what way the wind is blowing compared to what way you want to drop the tree, if it's both the same direction you are good, if it is blowing the wrong way, the wind will win and and the tree will most likely go the wrong way.
I dont fell a lot of trees. Too windy would probably be my stopper. In a woods with no obstacles id say go for it. Im not a good judge of wind speed to i may have voted wrong. Take into consideration widow makers if the trees are dead as well as dead limbs on nearby trees. Have a good escape path planned when the tree starts over. Clear away and obstacles.
I don't work in the woods if the trees tops are swaying , the forest floor is littered with limbs that came from above . to me it's simply not safe.
I voted the lowest MPH. Like mentioned, if the tree tops are swayin', I ain't fellin. Just not in that much of a need to do it in those conditions. Better safe than sorry.
Wind speed and how windy is too windy to drop a tree is in dirrect correlation to on's skill level, up to a point. At some point it's too windy for everyone unless it's a rescue. Listen to your inner lumberjack and only cut what is comfortable for your skill level.
Here in Wyoming if I waited for the wind speed to get below 25 mph I would never get anything done. Just part of living here. I would say anything above 25 mph is starting to get too windy. Also, during the wintertime it is not just the wind it is the wind chill you have to be concerned with too.
I agree with the wind chill as well. I was cutting up some tops today, temp was 31 so not bad. About 20 minutes in the wind started whipping and I called it quits about 5 minutes later. Crazy how much colder even a 10-15mph breeze can make it feel.
Please clarify. Are we talking felling trees or just bucking them? I could buck up a tree in a 25 mph wind and think little of it if not too cold. I wouldn't even think of felling one of our big Doug Firs if it is windy!
Felling trees it really depends on a lot of factors, but working in the woods in a stiff wind is always a potential danger. Tree limbs fall from unseen/unexpected places in the wind & even a smallish one can get ya pretty good. 6" limb from 30' to the head will kill you.
I had a tree blow over and crash beside me one time while cutting. I just shut the saw off and set it down, and woomph. About 50' to my right. Didn't hear it coming or see it. So now when its windy i don't go out in the woods cutting If the trees are swaying. Not sure how much wind that takes, probably 25mph
campinspecter' father was falling an alder while it was windy. Two tree crossed just as the falling tree fell between them. When the two trees uncrossed, the fallen tree swept around in a circle and nearly did in his dad. Falling trees in windy conditions is not the best idea.
