Apologies Eric, I missed your post. It works great for burning down Mulberry & Osage coals. It does have a strange odor when burning, almost like an incense. I can’t quit place the scent. The only reason I have it is because when I was cutting at the state park last year, there were several Ash trees taken down in the equestrian area so I was just working my way around the place. This tree was the last one & I wasn’t paying much attention while limbing then started looking a bit closer, I figured it was already mostly limbed & on an asphalt path I may as well go ahead & finish working it up. The woodpeckers were working it over pretty good. I have a little over a cord of it. I told my wife she could have it for the fire pit but she hasn’t used any of it so I started using it to burn down coals & will use it in the spring for morning fires.
Was a balmy -22 this morning when I rolled out of bed. We're burning a steady stream of Red Oak with Aspen mixed in.
Good to know. If I ever have the opportunity I'll try some out. I've been burning coal beds down with conifers this year but I almost have to run them with the stove door cracked open 1/4" to get enough air in there.
Happy Sunday! We have had some warm weather lately with temps up to 6c/42f so that knocked down a bit of our big snow load. Unfortunately it brought with it lots of ice on the roads. It was a nice break to go to evening fires for a bit. -7c/19f under clear skies currently. I had one of my stacks fall over due to snow load (I think) so Ill investigate how it failed and get it upright again. Looks like it will be a nice day to work in the sun!
Went from 77 inside @ about 11:30 last night to 70 when we woke. Currently 17 out, snow expected around 3-5p. All red oak in the Englands.
Oh boy! We have 15 inches of snow on the way tonight. The hearth has a bunch of logs warming up and I have a buggy full of my best splits sitting outside the door --mostly maple and hawthorne. The lawn-tractor with plow blade is battle parked. Only thing left to do is grab my snow shoes.
It was 0 outside this morning, but is warming up into the 20's this afternoon. They've bumped our predicted snowfall tonight into tomorrow to 12"-18". We are burning ash, beech and read oak, and will be for the next few days. We are well stocked with venison and other supplies and will hunker down.
The city hasn’t plowed anything and I mean nothing. This is my road, so I stopped to get a picture. Mayhem with cars backing down hills and dummies with awd suvs riding bumpers. we got about 4” of snow with 4” sleet and now it’s raining.
Around 20f when we got to TSC. Wanted to see how the cold starting was and it passed. Maybe 4-5 pulls and took right off. Who knows the last time it was started so in the truck it went.
Currently 16F out and 70F in. The wood furnace is doing the work with a mixed load of oak, maple and cherry. We have snow flying and the fireplace going for ambiance too. Fireplace is chugging on locust and some cedar. Put a color changing pack for the fun of it.
23 and rising slowly. Supposed to be getting some overnight snow transitioning to ice then rain by morning, with daytime highs tomorrow in the mid to upper 30s. Only a small fire right now with a split of apple and a couple of black birch.
21F/69F. What a pleasant temp break. The 6 inches of snow and wind was less fun My Toro blower with a couple hrs on it (in 2 years!) works nice. Just installed a load of R. Oak.
31/77 with wind chills at 16. Couple inches of white, now freezing ran and rain mix bag. Should be a joyful morning. Loaded up w/ 60/40 red/chestnut oak and shagbark hickory.
