Our new place in the country has an island in the kitchen in need of a countertop. The counters along the walls have quartz countertops. I’m a very amateur woodworker but want to give it a shot. First step was getting the wood. 2” thick hard maple. Gonna joint and plane at my friend’s place in the next few weeks. I will get him a bottle of vodka and a few steaks. will post more photos as I make progress.
I’m not doing butcher block that looks like a bunch of small squares. after jointing and planing, I will cut to size and glue together. Also going to use biscuits. haven’t figured out finish yet, but should be food grade
Had to chuckle at that. We all have firewood things too much on the brain! grandgourmand I will be interested in this thread also. Want to see how the cookies work out.
So time to be honest with you guys…what started out as a DIY project turned out to be almost completely outsourced. It all started when I looked for a guy that could do the board planing for me, as I didn’t want to buy one. When the guy said he could glue it all up, it was hard to say no. For $25o of wood and $400 of labour I got this:
Oh and no biscuits. Just glue. The guy told me biscuits are useless on something like hard maple. And the finish is Odie’s wood oil. Not gonna be cutting on this thing but still wanted food safe
Yeah me too. I don’t want to invest in a board planer (yet). And we priced out this countertop from a maker and they were quoting $1500 (Canadian) for thinner material. Ours for less than a grand and boards we got to select ourselves is great value.
